    Savage Palma Rifle!

Guy, The enthusiasm is great, but.... THE RIFLE IN QUESTION IS STILL A PROTOTYPE. And no, such a rifle is NOT necessary to begin shooting Palma with either. In the US, an AR-15 Service Rifle (i.e., 20" barrel, iron sights) is a legal Palma rifle. And while the short sight radius and lower MV...

    Progressive press question

A 650 minus the casefeeder is a pain in the neck to run. The reason why I can process ~700 cases/hour is because I'm not constantly fishing around for cases or loading them onto the press.

    Progressive press question

The Hornady powder measure is as good or better than that on the Dillon. Dillon toolheads are probably more convenient to change (NOTE: I've never used a Hornady press). It all comes down to what features you want, and which ones you can live without. BTW, you can mount a Hornady powder...

    Progressive press question

Sizing & trimming takes place at 600-700 rounds/hour. Loading takes between 100-400 rounds/hour, depending on what's being done. If I'm throwing powder into the case (300 yards and below), it's 400 rounds/hour. If I'm weighing each charge (500+ yard ammo), production drops to 100 rounds/hour...

    Progressive press question

I size (and trim) everything in the first pass through the press, then tumble off the lube. Loading occurs on a second pass.

    Custom competition bullets

Why are you thinking of shooting lightweight bullets from a magnum? Sure you get high velocity - but you'd get more retained energy and less wind drift by using a heavier match bullet with a higher ballistic coefficient. Down side to using heavier bullets: More recoil.

Suggestions for Building a Shooting Range

1000 Yards minimum, with room to shoot to 2500. No benches, no facilities for shotgun shooting, and no plinkers allowed. Why? Benches. I don't shoot from a bench, and therefore have no need for them. (It's my dream range, after all.) Seriously, I see benches as promoting way too many bad...

Suggestions for Building a Shooting Range

NOTE: I am NOT a certified civil engineer or range designer, have never actually built a range, and do not work for the NRA. However, I have done some research on the subject of building ranges. The discussion below is in no way meant to discourage you from proceeding with your project...

A few questions (while trying to develop my 77gr 223 loads)

A friend actually shot a sub-.25 MOA group with an AR-15 in a registered benchrest match - before semiautos were outlawed from such competition. However, he didn't shoot the bullets through the magazine - each round was single loaded. Benchrest rifles aren't your run-of-the mill rifle...

A few questions (while trying to develop my 77gr 223 loads)

It is normal for semiauto rifles to scratch the bullets - the feeding process isn't gentle, and it isn't silk lined. As you mentioned, the feed ramps on the AR are the culprit in this case. Some shooters take a crocus cloth to the sharp edges to reduce this - personally, I never bothered...

Ideal twist rate for shooting 77 gr. bullets ?

Anything faster than 1-9". Unlike most people, I don't subscribe to the theory of "twist rate giving the best accuracy for a given weight bullet". In ballistics, "stable" means the ability of the projectile to return to point first flight following application of an external force. Using this...

    Brass life 308?

Depends on: How high the pressure is in the load; How soft the brass is, and its thickness; How much resizing is occuring each time; The amount of work hardening in the case; The type of action being used. With a tight chamber and a matching set of full length dies, some shooters have gotten...

    Braso for brass cleaner

I'm a degreed metallurgist - are you? In one of my classes, we performed a stress corrosion experiment, using brass and mercury. The behavior of this system is similar to brass and ammonia. All current literature on stress corrosion cracking use brass and ammonia as a prime example of this...

    Braso for brass cleaner

Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't result in failure. Using your logic, you can extinguish a match in a pail of gasoline, so what's the harm in lighting the match?
