I'm sorry that my previous post didn't seem to convey that.

I know a guy who uses a 7600 cut down to 18” and carry’s it for bear defence while berry picking, it has a folding remington 870 stock on it, it folds down nice and compact and has a ghost ring sight setup on it. I guess that makes it an Amish assult rifle!!!!

This is what his looks like, not his rifle but setup very similar

Vince not to worry I was teasing that's why I gave you a (y)

Thebear, that would be a very handy piece for sure in a Whelen or 338-06 for close encounters of the Bear kind.  Seriously that will work.

Bet you have some pretty sun set views from the beach.

WT, sorry we got off subject here.

Don't worry about being off topic. The nice thing about the rifle is that if the wood does not look the best, there are ways to fix it. Dad said there is a spot where there was rust and they took steel wool to get it off. While doing so, they took some of the blueing off. Like I said to dad, as long as it shoots, I don't care about looks. This will be a deer driving beating the brush gun. I have been on enough drives to know that I want a rifle that is going to get used, is fast, reliable, and when the bullet gets to it's target hammers deer. I hate making drives where guys hit deer and they run for a good distance. I want them down and down now.

I would be a guy could really make sweet bush rifle with the 7600.. I'd love to have one that could be broken down, Cerrakoted for weather imperviousness, Micro Slicked on the internals and just hunted with little regard to what the weather is like..

I wouldn't worry about the Whelen planting deer. It is one of the ones that just seems to put a TON of blood on the ground, fast and most of the time, animals don't get too awfully far away from the murder scene....

I concur.
I also apologize for dragging the topic off the trail.

No need to really apologize Vince, usually the threads right themselves eventually..

Well, I have great trust in my dad and when he said the rifle looked good I had to add the 35 Whelen brass and a few boxes of 250 Hot Cors to the cart that had .243 brass. So....now I have brass and bullets, I might as well get the rifle.

You only go around once so have all the toys you can get.

WT, if it doesn't have a good recoil pad on it get a Limb saver or one of the new Remington pads which I believe are made by Limb Saver and you will love that rifle.

Yeah, Limbsaver pads are, Da' Bomb!

I was able to see the 35 whelen today and it was not love at first sight. The crown, bore, and barrel look good but the metal and stock are rough. It was a truck gun and has spots where the bluing is rubbed off.

So here is the question.

Pass on it and hope for a better one.
Get it shoot it and if it doesn't shoot send it down the road.
Get it and if it shoots keep it and forget about how it looks.
If it is a shooter. Dura coat it some time as a project.

They are asking $575 for it. Buying a 30-06 and a rebore would run about $650-700 the way I figure at a minimum.

So what would you do? It is on hold for 60 more days.

If it doesn't grip your heart now, it won't do so later. There is one exception, and that is if you are willing to spring for the money to put on a new stock and either reblue or finish the barrel and action. Otherwise, I'd pass.

Putting a new stock on would not be hard to do. Refinishing it if it was a shooter would be easy to justify also. I just don't know what to do. It the bluing would have been. Better the deal would be over.

How hard is it to dura coat a rifle and can that bring it back to life? Is it as hard as bedding a rifle?

To do it right there is a lot of metal prep to be done and complete disassembly. good metsl prep takes time and duracoat is better if baked on, ceracoat is better than duracoat and you can get it parkerized for $200-250 most places. If you have access to bead blast and fine media that helps a lot.

If you just want a whelen there are a couple 750s on gunbroker right now for 625-650 and they are nice rifles. If your stuck on a pump I'd keep your eye open for a nicer 7600 and bore it out,

Probably cheaper to have one bored out to 35 whelen than a good refinish job.
