I'll normally take a pass on a Bobcat. For some reason, I prefer to observe vs shoot them. However, the owner of the ranch I hunted last weekend issued an edict to shoot any Mountain Lions, Coyotes, Bobcats or Fox we see. Said he has too much money invested in his animals and can't risk losing them to Predators. Understandable.

After concluding my afternoon hunt, I was walking back to camp and saw this Bobcat slink into the road about 50 yards ahead. He stopped and stood broadside...just staring at me. Darn it, I thought. I really didn't want to shoot this guy , but I wanted to stay in good graces with the ranch owner. I slowly shouldered my 257 Wby, hoping he would take off. Well, he didn't. Below is the result.

As an aside, I am having a full body mount done. The cat will be stretched out on a log, lying lengthwise, with a front and back leg hanging over the log. The exit side will be repaired, but will be facing the wall, so not too worried about what the repair looks like.

You might consider carrying a few light loads for taking the occasional fur bearer. A light load with trail boss should hit reasonably close to your poi with full power loads up close and cuase a lot less fur damage.

Nice looking cat, should make a really nice mount.

Very nice! Good looking cat! That WBY is a sharp looking rifle too! Great shooting.

Did you have to track him far?
Congratulations!

Laughin' here! I'm thinking pretty much any bullet from a .257 Weatherby at 50 yards was going to make a mess out of that cat. Doubt he suffered long, pretty much a "lights out" shot.

Great shot by the way, and congratulations on the cat. Yes, I'd put that exit side towards the wall too. Please show us a photo of the mount when it's done. That's a good looking cat, well one side is anyway...

Congrats! Guy

Thanks SJB. It's become my "go to" rifle as of recent. I like it for it's consistent accuracy and deadly performance on game. I especially like not having to worry about beating it up during the normal rigors of hunting. I have a Mark V Deluxe 270 WBY Mag that I absolutely love, but am constantly worried about damaging the stock while I'm hunting with it. With my 257, it's very comforting not having that worry.

I can see that. It is nice to have a go to rifle.. That 257 just looks like a hammer!
