What OCL does Nosler use for the 140gr Billistic tip and AccuBond?

I just loaded up my work to pressure loads using Hybred 100-V. I used the max OCL of 3.340". And will also find my rifles bolt to lands distance and compare these before I shot any.

I was surprised just how long it was, all the factory ammo I have used is lots shorter than the spec. Max OCL.

I am not sure what their loaded lengths are, but I think your starting in a good place. Usually mag length or .010-.025 off the lands (or as far out possible with the given bullet) is where I start. I would almost bet you would find something where your at right now.

I would bet Nosler seats to SAAMI specs or under for their load work.

As the saying goes there is not stupid question, but what does OCL mean. I get OAL what is OCL and if it could be explained simply for this old guy
Thanking everyone in advance.

Blessings,
Dan

Dan,

OCL = Overall Cartridge Length

It is the equivalent of OAL (Over All Length) or COAL (Cartridge Over All Length). Depending on the ogive, ammunition manufacturers vary the OAL of the cartridges they produce. SAAMI standards are maximum recommended lengths.

I think the purpose of the saami max is so ammo companies make ammo that fits all types magizines or rifles out there. Often for a removable mag you cannot load longer than 3.340 due to restricted mag. lengths. Hence the factory ammo I have on hand for the .270 is loaded from 3.290 down to 3.265 depending on the brand. The bullet jump is rather substantial exceeding .200 in my rifle. With the 140 BT I get a jump of .055 even when loading to 3.400 COAL.

I've played a bunch with both of these bullets and they both prefer a lot of jump in my Remmy. When I say a lot, I mean a LOT!

I don't have access to my home PC and notes but I want to say max OAL with the ABs in my chamber is ~3.50". My handloads duplicate the Federal Vital-Shok load in OAL as they shot extremely well in my rifle. I want to say OAL was in the ~3.250" area. I remember that I had almost .3" of jump in my best loads with both of these bullets. Hornady SSTs were very similar.

I'll get exact measurements when I return in a few weeks.

YMMV.

I've found the .270 Win not to be very sensitive to COL.
I've loaded for a dozen 270's, and everyone one has shot well at magazine length.

I measured the distance to the lands on my rifle. And the 140AB set to 3.340" OCL and measured with a comparator is about 0.120" from the lands.
I have to watch the distance to lands even with MAX SAMMI OCL's when loading the 35rem, 358win, & 223rem. The 358 is a custom barrel and a 225gr PT set to 2.780" will touch the lands. While my 221rem and 270win are way out there +0.100".

I know it changes with different bullet profiles. I just started with some that varied from say .020" to .050" when set to the max OCL.

I see some manuals that use OACL and others that use OCL for "over all cartridge length" but spell out "max case length" and "trimed case length".

Thanks

when I get to shot these and find a load I will post the data.

I do not usually purchase rifles with DBM's because of the COAL issue of some factory ammo being shorter than SAAMI spec which for the standard .270 Win is 3.340 inches. The exception being the Sako 85 in .338 Federal but 210 grain Partition bullets do not go too far into the powder space.

I try generally to use the enough COAL to seat bullet bearing surfaces to approximately the bottom of the neck which makes them a little longer than spec for some calibers and bullet weights, especially long bullets like the .257 or 7 mm Mags. For instance, my .257 Roberts has loads which are about .120 inches longer than spec because the rifle was built from a full length Browning action and the Mauser 57mm case is limited in capacity for longer bullets and I want optimal velocity by only seating to the neck.

For big game hunting loads for the .340 Weatherby, I use pretty close to SAAMI COAL because I want 100% reliabiltity of feeding and am not as worried about bug sized groups.

My 270win is a rem 700 classic no drop box just standard Long action magazine length. I have not measured it but there seems not to be much longer than 3.340". These AB's set to that look pretty long so I have an easy .030" to shorten the OCL to find a sweet spot for accuracy if needed.

My first work up loads with my 223rem set to the max sammi OCL found a super accurate load that gets a berger 52gr HPV bullet to 3274 fps and is well under max load and pressure. Could I be that lucky again?

MOA @ 100yards and 2850fps with a 140gr/.277" bullet would be great. All smiles and grines and such. I went with the V-100 because it fits between H4350 & H4831 both great 270win powders and it boost velocity about 100fps.

Maybe my 270 Win is a different animal, but it allows me to have cartridges as long as the magazine will allow. 130gn Ballistic Tips made a .75" group at 200yds using this technique, along with 50gn of H-414, starting with a cold barrel so I'm happy.

I think you'll like the results using hb-100 , I have had excellent results with it in 243 win and 6mm rem. and just recently started playing with it in the 300 win , my rifle did not like the load I developed last year with IMr 4831, so I started from scratch with hb-100 and have already found a load that will need minimal tweaking . Good luck.
