165 Accubond with the 30-06

I always used IMR 4350 with the 165 gr PT in my 30-06 with excellent accuracy and on game performance.

Thanks everyone,
I have some H4350 coming in a few days. Thought I would try it, like the fact it isn't temp. sensitive. Will use this for Whitetail Deer only. I believe the 165 will perform better when encountering bone at different angled shots vs the 150 I have shot for years plus I would expect some energy gain depending on Velocity achieved. If I ever encounter a larger framed Whitetail I would want the 165 for it's abilities and capabilities.

I have used the 165 AB in a model 700 30-06 for my grandson's first rifle, he took his first elk with it in fine fashion (raghorn bull). He also took his first buck in 2010 with this load and 165 Ballistic Tips. The load is 165 AB/ 58 grains of IMR 4350 and it shoots well under inch groups. My model 70 featherweight in ought 6 also shoots the load amazingly well. From my experience this would be my go to load in any 30-06 for starters! I have used the big magnums for years, but now wonder why with such good combinations in the smaller, lighter, easy shooting guns.

Did you get complete penatration?

I don't remember, but probably not! I didn't get it from my 300 Wby with 180 AB's at the same distance (250 yards). Dead bulls and bucks tell the tale!

Shot one buck thru the shoulder at 35 yds with 150 BT. Smashed the shoulder exited size of dime or so. Happy I got the buck. What I expected from the bullet.
Second buck following year shot at 55 yds. with 150 AccuBond thru the shoulder blade exited little larger than dime. Great bullets wasn't really aiming for the shoulders in both accounts had to hurry the shot based on reaction of the deer as happens to all of us at times. The bullets did not fail.

Reason for possibly moving to a 165 is I want just a little stouter bullet when encountering bone and or muscle mass.

The 30-06 seems to digest 165/168 grains bullets with aplomb. Though I can get more velocity out of the 150 grain bullets, the 165/168 get my attention for the 30-06.

Yeah I hear you. I'm getting 3,000 fps now with the 150. Thought if I could achieve 2800-2900 with the 165 it would be golden! :)

Don

I can't see you having any issues getting 2800 from the 165 in the 30-06. My 308 has shot them into the 2800's pretty easily and the 30-06 has a bit more room for fuel. I would think in a 22" barrel 2900 should be fairly reasonable, but every rifle is a little different. Good luck, looking forward to seeing how it works. Scotty

I'd be tickled funny to get 2900 fps from a 165 in my 22" barrel. But would be very happy with 2800-2850 too. It's going to be a little while till I can get to the Range. But when I do, I have 3-rifles to shoot, trying some different loads.

Looking forward to hearing about the Whelen and 06 Don. Take lots of pictures. Scotty

Just got back from the range little while ago. Loaded the 165 Ballistic Tip for the 30-06.
Was using H4350 Powder & CCI 200 Primers. Started with 56.0, 57.0 & Max @ 57.5 using 1x Fired cases that I neck sized with RCBS neck sizer die.

Best Results: 57.0 2675 fps 3-Shot group covered a Nickle at 100 yds.

This is a 22" Barreled gun.

No pressure signs at Max Charge, will try bumping up a grain or two slowly, would like to see 2800 fps and same grouping.

May give RL22 a try later.

Anyone use W760 Powder in their 30-06 with 165 AB or Ballistic Tips with good results?

Don

Just finished working up a 165 gr AB load for my Rem .30-06 BDL 24". Remington cases,
59.5 gr IMR 4350, Rem. LR primers, and seated .020 off the lands. 2880 fps and .56 MOA. Would have preferred a lighter powder load, but that's where I found the accuracy and still no pressure signs.

Thanks, that's where I'm heading with H4350, just have to work up to it.
