I recently purchased a 1981 Mod 700 7mm Express (.280) It has the 1 in 9.25" twist and factory throated long ( for their older 165RN/150 CLKT factory loads). I'm working on some 154SST ( can load 3.5" and still be 30 thou off the lands!) and R22. I have some Speer 160HC to try later, but thought I would try the 168 AccuBond first before the 160 AccuBond since its longer. I ordered some yesterday. I believe I can get it to shoot with 7828/R22/or Magpro, which I have on hand. I normally hunt where shots are 300 or much less, so not trying to make a 600yd load! I was wondering if anyone here has tried this bullet in any standard 7mm round i.e. 7mm/08-280AI range? I'm using Nosler brass and it has tight primer pockets, I can't use the current Lot of Fed 215GM mag primers I have so am stuck with BR2 or WLR on hand ( both great primers btw). Normally I would try a mag primer with any slow powder over 55 gr or so, just for grins. Many times I've tightened the grouping doing so. In my 22" barrel, since I can seat them further out, any opinions I can reach 2800 with this bullet? I'm not willing to settle for less than 2700 ( I might as well have kept my 7mm08 in that case!) I can't find any 160 Partitions but if this AccuBond will shoot I won't care. Every AccuBond on a critter I've killed or seen killed acted just like the Partition to my observation.

I think you'll easily hit 2800 with any of the powders you have. I am looking forward to your results. When I get home I'll send you some data.

Thanks Scotty! Hope you and yours had a great Thanksgiving! I found some WLRM primers locally and they fit ( of course) as good easy as the WLRs I have. I loaded up some of the Speer 160 HC to 3.43 ( 25 thous off the lands) and 7828. I also swapped out the Elite 2x7 I had on it with a Nikon Monarch 4x12AO so I can "finesse" it, ha. My chrono had broken one of the rinky dink snap together skyscreens my last trip before this one. I had used camo duct tape ( on top) but it seems to still be dark enough the sensor can't read it right. I replaced it with clear packing tape. ( I'm Scots-Irish, I don't mind spending money if I "have to", but will try most anything before I do!) if this doesn't cut it, I'll try to order a replacement ( Beta Chrony). Have a blessed Sunday! I'm off to work! Jim

Thank you Msgt! I really appreciate it, I know it takes time to work up the data. Now, one last (for now) favor, ha. I have a member who is a dir hard .240 Weatherby user. He uses the 95gr Partition on everything. Mark V rifle, Weatherby brass. He wants to try some Superformance powder, but has no reference as to where to start, and he doesn't have a chrono. Would you mind seeing if QL has Superformance info for that 240? I'm off today. heading back to the range. Jim
P>S> On a sadder note, my Msgt SIL's unit's First Sgt commited suicide last week. He was just 33! PTSD and loss of his wifes job pushed him over the edge. Poor guy. My SIL tried to talk with him, steer him toward therapy ( my SIL is doing well with his PTSD, he's recovering just fine himself with the help of therapy/meds) I hope you are doing OK? It seems you have a good relationship with your family and any wife that would buy her man a Model 70 is a gem! lol Take care Marine.

No Superformance data in QL yet. I don't anticipate seeing it immediately because of the narrow target for burn rates.

I don't have nothing for the QL and the 240 but wanted to make sure you pass my thoughts along to your son in law Jim. That's ashame and I hate to ever hear of Marines taking their own lives. I'm always here if anyone needs me. Not a great counselor but I'll always listen and help with what I can.

Sorry for your loss. Scotty is a great guy and he would lend an ear anyone here!

I got great results at the range today! 55gr Imr 4350/Speer 145 got a nice .5" cloverleaf for 2950fps. The Hornady 154SST and 59gr R22/BR2 got a solid 2900. The Speer 160/7828/WLRM got a solid 2800fps but ignition seems a bit too violent, primers a bit flat. Will try R22/BR2 next time. The 4x12x40AO surely helped out!

Yep, my chrono fix worked swell, I love saving money, ha! That 154SST also got a cloverleaf, but almost touching each other! At its high BC and 2900fps, I got my sage flat/mountainside mule deer load. I know the Speer 160HC bumps up quicker and has a longer bearing surface than the 154SST, but the primer flattening was no good. I don't know if the WLRM has a softer cup than the Fed 215GM I normally use, no reference for me there, but I should have gotten 2750 pretty easy, instead it was too warm at 2800fps. I would love to get 2800 safely with that 168ABLR but even a solid, accurate 2700 will work for me, but hey, more power! more power! Right?
On another great note- the 145/2950fps and the 160/2800fps are the exact speeds I got out of my first/only experiment with the 280 AI in a 22" Mod 700 Mountain Rifle! I got 2950 with the Nosler 150BT and 2800 with the Speer 160HC. Those were the only two bullets that rfile liked. I am pleased as a pig in slop as I can match/almost match that particular 280AI w/o all the fireforming, ha!

Those are some great loads you have there for your 280 Rem.
Nicely done.

Thanks guys. I figure that's great accuracy/velocity, especially for a hunting rifle, has a 2 3/4 lb trigger pull. I got in the 168 ABLRs today, just got through loading them up. I could never locate any 150 ABLRs, but I'm OK with the 168. They should hit as hard as a 30.06/180 does. They look like long match bullets! Just beautiful. They touch the lands at 3.56" and I'm starting out at 3.51" ( 50 thous off) I'm sticking with the BR2 and loaded two batches, one with R22 (stopping at 57gr) and the other with Magpro ( stopping at 60gr) I'm not too happy with 7828 right now, ha. I've never used Magpro before and was surprised to see that the Nosler load data doesn't call for a magnum primer. I suppose its not that hard to light. I was also surprised at how well that Nikon 4x12 balanced on the rifle, heck, I'm leaving it on there! ha

Went to the range today and bingo! I found my load for this long 168 ABLR seated at 3.51". 57gr of R22, BR2 and new Nosler brass gets me a solid 2750fps for a .48" cloverleaf! Shabing! I'm happy. I could probably get 2800 if I kept working at it, but why? This 57gr load is warm but certainly not hot, and with this bullets extremely high B.C., I don't think I could take advantage of another 50fps! Magpro was a bust; poor accuracy and at least a 100fps behind R22. Just goes to show you how different each rifle/load is- this Magpro was supposed to get 2800 with 60gr, but it sure didn't. So I'm done ( for awhile anyhow, ha) I'm not going to pursue the Nosler 120 nor the 120 TTSX. I am going to stick with these three- the Speer 145BT, the 154 SST and this 168 ABLR. I'm going to load up all three and try at 200yds next time, Lord Willing. Later this summer I might play with the Speer 160 and R22, but not right now. I might get this Timney trigger lightened a bit more too in the meantime. This rifle doesn't copper foul either, yet I know it isn't overbored ( or it wouldn't shoot like this!) Some previous owner obviously broke it in properly. What a gem!

Well what do you know? I found some Nosler 150 ABLRs in stock and ordered a box plus a box of 150 Ballistic Tips. I just have to find out what this baby will do with the 150's, ha. I'm jazzed! Dropped the rifle off at the smith's to lower the trigger pull to 2 1/4 to 2 1/5, see if this helps. I've been using R22 with the Hornady 154, think I can get "similar" results using this R22 with the 150's? I have more Win 760 than I do IMR 4350, think I should try it?

My "go to" load in my Remington built .280 is 150 grain ABLR with a stiff charge of VN560. Velocity is far greater than it should be and accuracy is excellent. I know from personal experience that it will drop mule deer and elk with real authority.

That's great to know they work swell on muleys/elk there Dr.Mike. I haven't seen any N560 around here in a few years,ha. I burn a little bit of N140 in my 22-250 AI and the 68gr Hornady, very cool burning powder. I'll keep an eye out for some of the N560, have to give it a try later on! P.S. I had both my knees replaced around 4 yrs ago, I'm sure glad I did too! Have a great service tomorrow! Rev Jim Knight
