Well, maybe it might be time for me to finally join the .17 RF bandwagon. Problem is, I don't really know what's out there as far as guns. Looking for a bolt action; minimum 5 round magazine, I guess detachable is OK; wood or laminate handle, but no funky shapes or thumbholes (I guess this is saying a 'classic' style). I don't need something super light, don't need iron sights, would like a good trigger out of the box. I don't really like the Savage .17 RFs that I have looked at. I'm (obviously, if you've been following along at home  ) don't mind spending a bit of money, but an Anschutz might be a little too steep. The Ruger is a possibility, either the SS/laminate 'Target' model, or the blue/walnut version, but I'm a little leery of some of the tales of woe I've read on line. So, does anybody have experience with the Ruger? Any other options?

Thanks, all.

Kurt,
Your welcome to try my Ruger 77/17HMR - I love it. I have a CZ453 that you could try as well; Heck, I might even sell the CZ453 soon. I also have your sling done - it matches your purple Mcswirly! 8)

I love mine!

Gene, I already have a .17 Remington. Just looking for something I don't need to obsess over loading for.

Scott, I may take you up on that. What's the barrel length on the CZ?

Kurt,
I know you said that you didnt like the Savage but I must say that mine has performed flawlessly. The accutrigger has a good reputation. It certainly wont win any beauty contests but it holds a very tight gorup. Marlin makes a bolt action .17HMR but I dont know much about their triggers. I have a HOOT shooting mice and pocket gophers with my .17

Kurt,
The CZ453 has a 21" heavy fluted barrel with a single set trigger. It is a tack driver! Here is a shot of both my 17HMRs.

Here's an endorsement of the CZ. I got one for my son a few years ago. What a hoot. Well built, accurate as all get out. Incredibly easy to shoot. I've found the ammo actually produces about 2,600 fps, the same as many .308 Win loads... Vicious on varmints. And you're right, it's so easy to just buy a case of ammo and fire away...

It puts a huge grin on his face and mine whenever we shoot it. Terrific little cartridge, and the CZ is a dandy rifle.

Strong recommendation for the CZ, Guy.

Scott, that CZ453 is certainly a handsome rifle.

Guy, the only problem I see with that picture is that ammo box is almost empty! Ive got a Ruger 77/17 Mach 2 with a Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40 and was out slaying a some gophers with it over the weekend! I love mine. Not quite the damage that an HMR does but Im starting to like it more over my 22lr's.

The picture shows the entrance hole from a shot that was about 75 yards. Exit hole was pretty ugly.

My son has a Savage 17HMR.. I love that little rifle. I think if I were to buy one of my own a CZ would be a front runner. It is pretty accurate as well. I don't have ton's of test targets for it, but man, it shoots.. Love the little Accu-trigger as well.

Scott, that is a really sharp little 17 buddy! I like that one alot..

BK - I didn't do a lot of comparison shopping before I bought the CZ for my son. A few guys I know around here were using them with no complaint, and good reports of accuracy, so I bought it. Trigger pull is mushy - but I hear there is a kit to fix that. The newer rifles supposedly have that under control.

The little rifle has worked out well - then again I haven't heard of very many .17 HMR's that didn't shoot well.

If that "kid" ever completes college, moves out and takes it with him, I may have to buy another...

I replaced the trigger on my Ruger with a Basix - it now breaks at 1.5 lbs. with no creep. The CZ has the single set trigger and is real nice - you can use the standard when stalking and the set when at a bench or have the time to set it. Both guns shoot like Guys'. I favor the Ruger for several reason which are particular to my use. The Ruger has a larger clip 9 shots vs 5 and I found an after market from Shooter's Ridge that'll hold 25. Extra clips are more readily availible and cheaper for the Ruger. The set trigger on the CZ is great but will start to wear on me after 300 or 400 rounds when I'm rat shooting. The Ruger feels a little more like a hunting rifle and the CZ a little more of a target gun. I would highly recommend either!
