Good looking rifle!

Isn't it funny how 100+ years into the .30-06, we're still relying on the ol' warhorse? Three different threads going right now on handloading the ol' beast.

That's pretty cool.

Guy

+One, Yes pretty cool indeed. Nice, like it bobnob

That's a good looking rifle Bob, should be a real workhorse. I wonder if Hogue made the stock for them, looks like one to me.

Well I got out with the new rifle this morning and sighted in, shot a few groups, chronied some speeds and generally got the rifle into action.

First a half dozen or so shots at 50 metres to get the rifle near the point of aim and to shoot some through the chrony.

Then I shot a few 3 shot groups. The first such is below. Shots 1 & 2 as marked were both followed by scope adjustments before shots 3, 4 and 5 as marked which constituted the first 3 shot group at 95m or about 100y. It was a fraction over one inch and several subsequent groups were about the same size, but as they were all shot on this same target after I took the photo there's not much point posting the photo as the target just became peppered with a heap of holes.

With just 20 shots through the rifle it seems to have bedded in well, holding a good solid zero. Not too much fouling came out of the barrel though I gave it a good scrub. The bore seems a pretty good one for a cheap rifle.

No I didn't go through a regimented breaking in process. I just fired all 20 rounds starting with a well cleaned bore.

The load was 180g Interlock-FC brass-CCI standard primer-56.0g of H4350/AR2209-OAL 3.32in.

The load shot very mildly and seemed very easy on the brass and primers. Speed was 2670fps with low deviation, really good consistent speed between 2660 and 2685fps.

So not a bad start at all. Very encouraging.

As it turns out the rifle has a 600mm barrel or near enough to 24 inches, not the 22 inches it was advertised at. I was delighted to learn this and as such I intend to look for a little more speed around the 2750fps mark. As this load shot so mildly I will just load up some batches at higher charge weights to see what that does to speed/groups/brass etc before I start fiddling with seating depth.

Very nice! That kinda performance from a brand new barrel always brings a smile to my face as well.

I imagine a little extra powder will have you right where you wanna be. Doesn't look to be fussy at all. Congrats on a great rifle!

Bobnob,

You're off to a great start with that rifle. It looks as if it will prove very satisfying for you as you work up your loads.

That is one great looking stick capable of any NA game in capable hands.

Ok guys I am not gonna bore you with interminable range reports but I thought I would give one last update...

Second outing with the rifle saw me with 3 different loadings with which I shot 3 x 5 shot groups.

The first two lots were much the same as my initial test load however I adjusted the seating depth shorter with Lot A, to 3.24 which placed the case mouth at top of the cannelure, with Lot B I lengthened the OAL to 3.4 which is mag box length and 0.020 off the lands, and the third load Lot C was the same OAL as my initial load 3.32 however boosted the charge weight from 56g of H4350 to 57.5g.

This time I shot the groups at 150m or about 166y, because there was a convenient tree at that distance to nail my target to.

Groups A, B and C are below...

They measured 1.6, 1.7 and 1.7 inches respectively. By rough conversion they are right about moa with which I am very happy considering I was shooting over the tailgate of the ute. In truth I know I definitely pulled one shot low on both groups B and C. That being the case group B looks real good.

Speeds were A 2640fps ave; B 2680fps and C 2760fps. Brass looked very unstressed for all 3.

Anyway I will have more of a play of course - many more combos and variants to try - but I just wanted to post this to round the narrative off and say thanks for the advice and assistance.

Happy to hear any feedback.

Nice, that rifle is doing everything I'd want. I think you have a great one. Seems like your load C has alot of promise as well. Pretty fast and I imagine with some tweaking will get better yet.

Those groups will work with large game (and quite a bit of small game). Velocities are quite reasonable. You have developed a good load for a fine rifle.

Thought you blokes might like a quick update.

It all came together today, I took the new rifle and my carefully assembled handloads out today and bagged five pigs. It was a great day.

No record breakers, one decent boar in the 50+kg range, a couple of younger boars and two youngish sows.

All shots were under 75y and as you'd imagine the 180g Interlocks leaving the muzzle at 2750fps were devastating in effect. Two were Texas heart shots and they dropped on the spot.

I now have about 100 rounds down the bore, and the rifle is showing as a genuine 0.8 moa rifle with this load. With the 180g Nosler Ballistic Tips it is showing even a little more potential, that will be another project though.

Thanks for the help folks. Its all good!

- Bob

Nice going Bob, great way to break in the gun. I would imagine those younger pigs would be excellent eating.

The rifle and load is performing in spectacular fashion. That is a fine haul of pork. Great pictures, Bob.

Very nice. Seems like it just keeps performing as expected. Danged 30-06's anyhow!

You don't have a .30-06 Scotty? I thought every gun nut has at least one hidden somewhere in their gunsafe?

Very well done, sir. Sounds like your development with the 180 Interlock tracked very closely with what I found with the 180 Partition, and the same powder. And a nice rifle, too! If you're into barbecuing or smoking, there's been some terrific pork rub recipes posted here...

Keep whispering to him, Charlie; he'll crack sooner or later!
