190 gr. ABLR in 30-06?

I looked through the .308 bullet test section and I searched in the "reloading" area and can't seem to find postings about the use of the .308 190 gr. ABLR in a 30-06.

Is anyone using this bullet in a 30-06? If not, is there a reason it is not being used in the 30-06? On my first thought it would seem like a viable alternative for the 180 gr. Partitions and 180 gr. Accubonds.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Dan

Well, it seems like most of the 30-06 shooters on this site tend to stick with, A. Bullets in the traditional 150-180 range, and, B. The time-tested bullets that they've already had years of success with. Another reason for any potential low usage of that bullet in a 30-06 could be that not everyone does a lot of really long-range hunting, and those that do tend not to do it with a 30-06.

I doubt there's anything at all wrong with the 190 ABLR, and I'm sure it would work great in the old Dirty Thirty. I've thought about trying it myself. But I'd probably try the new 168 ABLR in the 30-06 first. And for that matter, I'd probably skip over the 190 and straight to the 210, myself...

I think the 190 gr ABLR would be perfect in the 30-06 and would be one of the first bullets I would try if I get another one. The 168 gr would probably be good as well but the 210 is too heavy in my opinion especially when there is the 190 gr option.

My comment about skipping to the 210 is based only on the fact that my particular rifle has a preference toward 200's and 208's. It shoots them more accurately than 180's, and not much slower.

Someone ran a Quickload for both the 190 and 210 ABLR bullets in a 30-06 at one point. I might have to see if I can find it.

I shot a good few 190g Hornady BTSP Interlocks in my 30-06. I was running H4350. Got right around 2700 and a bit FPS. I suspect the ABLR version would be a VERY nice big game cartridge.

I’d be starting with a load of around 54g of H4350 and work up. I think I was using about 56g in my Interlock load.

R17 would work nicely as well.

There was a lot of howling about the b.c. numbers not being right after Brian Litz tested them, they must have went back and tested them again I guess.

Jason, I agree that for those folks on this forum would tend to stick to their time tested loads with the bullets in the 150 gr. to 180 gr. range.

Gerry, I agree that for someone who doesn't have a time tested favorite load for their 30-06, the 190 gr. ABLR might be interesting to look at. The following data has piqued my interest.

It would appear that one could load it with Re26 in a 24" barrel and hit the OBT node of 1.228 ms at about 2780 fps. At sea level, the bullet would still have 2100 ft-lb of energy at 400 yards. That sounds interesting to me. I don't know if 107% fill is realistic. Is that a doable amount of powder compression?

I also read Bryan Litz comments when he post them on LRH site. I would think if they made change they would post something about it. Maybe we hear something next week

Dan I think up to 110% is pretty easy with a drop tube and you pour slow.

I actually think it’d be a great Bullet in the 06. Might have to give it a try in mine just to see what happens. Buddies are running the 200 Accubonds with 26 and getting up over 2700 pretty easily.

I’d think with that BC it would probably catch up and surpass a 300 Win with a 180 Partition at around the 300-400 yard mark. Not a bad place to be.

Scotty, thanks for the response. I will have to read up on using a drop tube.

Dan, that RL 26 data looks really good in the 30-06, 2800 fps with a bullet like that would cut into a lot of territory that magnum rounds used to have. Hunter is supposed to be very good as well.

I’d have to compare it some with a standard BC sorta bullet then the ABLR. Thinking it might look like the 30-06 is a 300

I have used this combination for a few years now. Killed a decent 8 pt last year with it. shot was a complete pass through at 259 yards. Deer was dead right there.

Posted about my load a while back. Used RL22. Can't see the pics now. link below.

Thanks for posting up your thread from 2014, I can see your photos in the thread after someone here posted up a way to see photobucket again a couple of months ago. Fotis posted up something similar recently here.

Congrats on the deer, that 30-06 load of yours shoots extremely well.

I've just got so doggone many .30 cal hunting and match bullets on hand... I don't really want to start playing with yet another bullet.

Could probably happily hunt for the rest of my life with the bullets on hand.

Could do most of my practice with 155 & 168 gr match bullets, of which I have probably a thousand, and hunt with the several hundred 165, 180, 200 & 220 gr hunting bullets on hand.

So, good as the 190 looks - I don't have any burning need to test it or use it.

When I can flop down on my shooting mat, put the crosshairs on the 300 yard gong, and score a first round hit time after time... I'm not sure there's any point in trying anything new for a load.

I use the 190 with the 30-06. I love it. I'm at work now but I can add more info later.

I've been very impressed with performance of the ABLR. I've seen the 210gr from a 300 win mag against a deer and 150gr from a 7mm-08 take a deer and coyote. In 14 years years working trauma and in hunting, one elk, 6 bucks and 5 does, I've never seen that kind of damage along the bullet path. The initial expansion and cavitation act like a ballistic tip but the bonding holds and bullets exits even after hitting a rib on the way in and out. I have basically lost interest in other bullets.

Unfortunately I've already deleted the pictures of the damage to the deer.

I have attached a picture of my 3 shot group at 100 yards out a savage with a factory 22inch barrel. I would still like to try the 168gr though.

RL-17 worked fine for me and no need for a drop tube I can almost reach 2800fps with a 22 inch barrel and less powder than some other powders.
