1st Bull elk!

I love my .338 its my favorite gun in the safe. I have gotten so comfortable with it that I choose to shoot everything from antelope to elk with it...I hope to take a moose with it someday.

OldTrader...what makes you think he might be 10 years old? I have no idea to even begin to estimate how old one may be?

...did you save the ivories??? Wear & the "growth rings" on the teeth can give you a pretty good estimate of the age...

I don't know without seeing the teeth and ivories. Just looking at the hair on his forehead and neck. Plus the deterioration of the mane on the side of the neck. The horns look old to me. After about 8 years old, the antlers start to lose mass and points. He just looks like a really old bull to me. That is good actually, the older the bull the bigger the trophy in my eyes.

My largest mounted Whitetail deer had no teeth left and was huge bodied but only weighed 199 pounds dressed. He had no meat on the ribs and his forehead had turned almost blond. He only had (9) points instead of the (10) long points he had a year before. He probably had lost 10-12 B&C points that year. I had been hunting him for 3 years.

Yes I did save the Ivories...I have all the ivories from every elk I have killed. I even have some that I found in dead carcasses that people left behind.

He looks to have been in good shape; he'll provide some excellent table fare this coming year.

Belated but heartfelt congratulations sir.
