We have a special hunt in Western Oregon, in the Willamette Unit, where you can take an additional deer, buck or doe. The majority of property is private and access is pretty limited. I was lucky enough to draw one of the tags, and even luckier to find a property owner willing to let me hunt.

It's a blustery raining day here in the Willamette Valley, but I was able to fill the tag this morning on a little forked horn buck. Definitely not the biggest buck, but a really fun and different experience to hunt in an orchard.

I used a 1953 commercial FN Mauser, in 7X57mm Mauser, using 139 grain Hornady Interlocks. One shot, high on the front shoulder, that exited behind the offside shoulder, passing through both lungs. The buck jumped, and fell over dead. It's the first critter I've taken with this rifle and load, so I was pretty exited to see the results!
