I have family in Idaho and this year my daughter and I decided to make a trip and do a little hunting with them. We were in no hurry so we took our time from So. Oregon stopping along the way to show her some areas I like to hunt and fish.

Pee break at one of my favorite hiding spots.

Going across the desert we saw this lone cow cross in front of us...she was lost, there isn't timber for 20mi in any direction....desert elk.

We hiked down into a drainage and found this nice little spot.

We got rained out one day and snow the next, between the snow and wolves we went lower and got into the elk.

On the way home, less than 20min of daylight left on the last day my daughter (aka eagle eye) spotted this small cow on the hillside. My uncle finished the deal.

My Dad passed away earlier this spring so we took his Winchester Model 70 in 30-06 into his stomping grounds and the family used it to fill their elk tags. Lots of great memories in this picture and more to be had.

Idaho has some very reasonably priced youth game tags...needles to say my daughter is hooked and will be ready for next year.

What a great account of a very meaningful hunt. Thanks for posting, and congratulations to the hunters.

Great hunt and awesome pictures.
Glad to know your dad's rifle is being passed down along with the tradition.
Hope it's still filling tags for your grandkids some day.

Thanks,
Howard

Thanks for the comments. That rifle was my Grandpa's on my Mom's side originally. It was given to my Dad in the 1980's and then to me when I graduated high school in the early 1990's. Lots of freezers have been filled with that rifle.

Whereabouts were you hunting? That terrain and scenery look very similar to the areas I hunt that are northeast of Idaho Falls where I live.

There is something about taking a .30-06 after big game. It isn't the most flashy round but will sure get the job done on just about anything. I also sling a Winchester 70 in .30-06.

We were in 32A. Yes, the boring old 30-06 just gets things done. :)

What a great post!! Thank you so much for the story & photos it really lifted my day . I am not a very good shut in .

Blessings,
Dan

Thanks for sharing that!! Wonderful and congratulations to all. The 30-06 is sure a sweet cartridge as it always has been and the meaning of using that particular rifle even makes it better!!

Very nice. Love me some Idaho and that old Featherweight is still looking great!

Congrats on all of the elk.
