Just returned from a week in the mountains of NE Oregon. Our group of six, harvested four bull elk this year. We hunted the general, second season, spike only hunt. We ended up getting into a herd of 150-200 elk on opening morning early, and took all of these bulls out of that group...Spent the next three days packing them out of the mountains. Each trip was 8 miles round-trip from the trailhead.
I was shooting a Browning A-Bolt, .338 Winchester Magnum with 225 grain Barnes TSX handloads, over 72.0 grains of RL-19.
The only bad part of the hunt was having to pass over multiple branched antlered bulls, searching for a spike! When we arrived in camp the weather was unseasonably warm, but by the end of the week it had snowed and dipped down into the low teens.
Ended up crossing a lone wolf track high on the hill...hated to see it, in an area that has been so productive for us over the years.
Thought I would share a few pictures.
