2025 Hunting Season

Tagged out on 200lb meat bear, 300 yard shot, bear dropped on the spot. Double shoulder shot with my brno 8x68s at 2820 fps, found the 224gr RWS cone point bullet on the off side. Recovered weight 134gr, so 60% weight retention. Bullet in my opinion is on the softer side, will get around this summer to load the 220gr Sierra gameking, woodleigh, or a 200gr nosler AccuBond.

Looking forward for some good sausage and hamburger.

Well I’m off to a slow start this year; No spring bear tag, neglected to buy a turkey tag, my luck with drawing Montana and Wyoming hunts ran out. I’ve drawn Montana at about 75 or 80% of the time over the last 35 years. Oregon is my last chance for elk and mule deer. Fingers crossed.

No animal, but the trip was worth the effort. Saw a small meat bear, but didn't take it. Saw a good population of mule deer and some whitetails. There were tons of snowshoe hares. That likely means a good predator population (lynx, coyote, etc.) coming on shortly. But the star of the show was this big boy.

Wayne, my hunting partner/guide, was able to snap these photos while I fumbled with my own phone. Colouration in this old boy was superb (very dark front paw and hump, lighter pelt elsewhere, and white muzzle). He looked to be an easy eight foot bear. No doubt king of his domain. We were able to watch from about one hundred yards of so for maybe thirty seconds before he ran into the bush only to reappear busting in front of us at a run. Down into a cutblock where he paused and turned to survey us for some time. He is a lovely bruin, that's for sure.

He looks pretty dang heavy for this early in the year.

He was in excellent shape! Weight was good, pelt looked to be in excellent shape, I thought he was "leggy," which would mean a lot of room for poundage this year. He was, as I stated, a solid eight footer, which is pretty good for a mountain grizzly. His presence would definitely account for the lack of black bear sign in that area!🤔

Congrats on your bear. He's a dandy.

It has been a good year. There has been good food in the paddocks for the animals and little hunting pressure on the properties we go to. Offshore has also been good with quite a few wahoo and mahi mahi this season too. I will hunt again soon in the coming weeks. Majority of game taken with sedate cartridges such as the 6.5x55, 7mm08 and 308.
