Ok. So as the title implies I am beginning my build of a22-250. Action is going to be a rem 700sa. Brux match barrel 24-26" but what twist should I run. I will be loading 55-60 gr bullets and pushing for around 3700 fps. Should I run the normal 12 twist or tighten up to 10 or 11

I went with a 1:8 twist so I can use the 70gn Barnes and 75gn Swift bullets. If you use the 1:10 you ought to be OK with up to 60gn bullets.

The rifle will benused for varmint and target. Cant use anything smaller than a 243 for big game in colorado. Thats why 55-60 gr bullets will be choice

Most hunting bullets up to 64gr and sometimes the 70gr speer semi pointed will stabilize in a 1-14" 22-250. Probably a safer bet at 1-12" which the 60gr Partition works better in. I really like the idea of a faster twist 22-250 but you do not need one faster than 1-12" for all the hunting bullets. Target bullets, Yes 1-8" or a standard 223 twist would be usable. PS: the longest bullet I get ok accuracy out of in my 1-14" is the 55gr BT. .810" or .805"

I would go 1-8. Tougher bullets like te BT and 60 PT will be fine. Plus, you'll be able to sling the 75-80 grain bullets out at long range if you wanted. The 1-8 won't hurt a thing with most anything but super think jacketed bullets.

I'm not positive but I think it was Charlie Sisk that recommended to t
Figure out what bullet/ twist combo your looking for and increase that by 1/2. IE if you believe a 1-12 twist will suit your needs a 1-11.5 is garunteed too.

Hornady lists their 55gn bullets needing 1:14 twist or faster to be stabilized. I wouldn't expect a heavier bullet to be stabilized in a barrel less than 1"14 twist.

14 is a STD 22-250 twist but a 10 would be FINE-better for up to 60 gr - All of my 22-250's have being 14 twisters and all have shot 50-55 gr-ers VERY well and have kept 60 gr Parts in 3/4 " range too ! RJ

I've seen 1:14 twist .22-250's fail to stabilize some of the longer 55 gr bullets, such as those with the plastic tips and boat tails.

If it's a varmint rifle, I'd twist it at 1:10 or 1:12 and use the 55's, but as a long-range target rifle I'd follow Scotty's advice and look at even faster twists to stabilize those really long, high BC target bullets... A fast twist .22-250 can be a terrific longish range target rifle!

I was in the local Walmart this week. They had the savage axis in 22-250 with the accutrigger. $279.95 plus the $10 background check fee. 1-12" If the wife was not shopping on the other side of the store I would be sighting it in this week. She knew I only had $15 in my wallet.

I would run a 1:10 twist so you could run the 60 gr BT for longer range shooting.

I'd get an 8 twist and unlock the true capability of the 22-250. There's nothing like pounding rock rucks at 700 yards with a 75 grain A-max at 3250 fps. You'll still do just fine with the lighter bullets too.

Thats what 6MM's were invented for ! My 6mm will pound those rocks with a 70 -75 gr at 3450-3500 fps ! LOL

Cheers :) RJ

Good point. However, if it were my 6mm I'd twist it up and drive 115 DTACS to get the most out of it. I prefer high BC bullets with enough velocity to get the ballistic advantage. You'd be surpised at how much easier it is to make hits in the wind with high BC heavies.

I was really lookin hard at gain twist but I think it might be best to stick with the 8-9 twist
