223 Rem and 22-250.

I wouldn't worry to much about that stability calculator...My 223 is a 12 twist and shoots lights out with any bullet from the 60g VMAX on down, including the 52g ELDMs and 53g VMAX which are 2 of the longer bullets for the varmint bullets, and it has zero issues banging them into tiny groups from the 12 twist Ruger at 3475fps.

I was playing around with that calculator the other day and according to it, the 40g VMAX is even marginable in my 12 twist 223 at 3800fps, shows a 1.31 factor...since when is a 40g bullet marginable in a 12 twist? What are we suppose to shoot then, the stubby 35g vmax designed for the 22 hornet? I think not...Hell even the 14 twists have no issues stabilizing 50 and most all 55g bullets besides the NBT...I've heard and read "some" 14 twist rifles have a hard time stabilizing the 52g ELDM/53g vmax/55g NBT as they are the longer varmint bullets of the bunch, but I've never heard of a 14" twist not stabilizing 50g vmax or NBTs in comparison...my 223 with a 12 twist shows like a 1.08 factor for the 52g ELDMs and a .97 with the 53g VMAX at 3475fps, but like I said, I have plenty of 1/2 MOA 5 shot groups that prove otherwise, and I'm only at 500ft ASL. So I'm not sure I totally buy into that garbage stability calculator at all! Why would they even make any 22 cal bullets over 40g if they were all marginally stable in 90% of varmint rifles that come in a 12 or 14 twist? Its hogwash...Hell even my 14 twist 222 rem shoots the 40g/50g/55g ballistic tips and vmax into 1/2 MOA groups or better.

Good thing Savage rifles are easy to rebarrel and there are tons of options for you from a lot of different makers. That short action could make a nice fast twist 22 cal rifle or on the other end a 358 Win so tons of options. Probably could find nice new take off barrel as well in lots of different configurations too.

Yep. An 1-1.5” at 100 yards isn’t marginal. I’d like to be able to hit song dogs on farm land at 100-400 yards. I’m certainly good to go at the lower part of that range. I think even 400, I think I’d get some, but I think there’s a risk I’d miss at 400 too.

I did check the action. I can get a 300 WinMag in and out with the bolt in place easily. These two rifles have the standard action. I’m probably partial to the 25.06 or anything that I could launch with an 06 case.... maybe even an oddball like 270WSM.

So lots of options. I’ll shoot it this January/Feb as is. With the 40’s or 50’s. The STAball 6.5 was at 0.6” and Benchmark was at 0.7”. With the 50 NBTs. If this replicate.. I’m in business. If not, I’ll try the 40’s.

That 223 with the 1:9, should stabilize every 223 round I have, which includes the 50gn Barnes and Speer TNT’s.

I just was under the impression they were both 1:12’s. Trust no one... I should have checked them when I bought them. Friend of a relation. I went looking for a light recoiling deer rifle... they guy had piles and would not part with them...at the end of the day, these where the two he was willing to sell. Both weight a ton. Stocks feel solid..probably glass bedded. Triggers are great on both.

So back to the calculators, the one I used said 1.3 was marginal, but military was looking for 1.5. I have to think that military number is taking into account service rifles that have taken a lot of action/heat. The barrel wear is probably good, I’m curious how many rounds fly from an active duty rifle serving in a conflict. I suspect, numbers that would boggle ones mind. That could be a good forum thread...how much shooting do you do in a year? Rifle, shotgun, pistol. I’ll throw that out there.

So I flipped the bullet selection.
22-250 1:14 twist gets 40 gn vmax
223 Rem 1:9 got the 50gn NBT
Tried TAC and Benchmark

Here’s two groups from the 223 with TAC. I’d say mission accomplished.

The triangle group is 26.7 gns
The verticals group is 25.8 gns
The groups in between were stable and triangular.

Sorry, without Chrono at present. Lost a lot of gear I. A flood last year. Still building up.

Sierra manual says 3290 for 25.6
And 3460 for 26.8.

I have a 26” heavy fluted barrel on that gun.. it usually shot a little faster than book when I had a magnetospeed.

I’ll got back and redo the 22-250 with 40 gn bullets... which will likely be low to mid 4000’s.

I too have had good luck with IMR 4198 with 50gr Blitzkings or Ballistictips in 223. Though last check that barrel is slowing down a bit. Those same bullets in 22-250 do well with Varget and of course H380.

Got the 22-250 out with 44gns of STABall 6.5 for 40 gn vMax
The 1:14 twist stabilizes the 40 grain easily. Should be around 4000 FPS.

Likes Sierra Blitz kings too. All loads with SBK and benchmark were under 0.75”.
