Shot this coyote yesterday morning with my pops Ruger Target 22-250. Bullet was 40g vmax loaded to 4100fps. Range was 197 yards and he was running. Led him a couple feet and touched off and was able to see him roll! Thats always nice. Bullet entered in the neck leaving about a 2 inch entrance hole, it did not exit. He was a big male, I'm guessing he weighed around 25-30 lbs. I'll be skinning this one out. Right after that I missed one around 300-350 which was also running. Saw 6 more but they were all way to far, or they went over a hill before I could get a shot at any of them.

well, well, well, look who said way too far. Now I've heard every thing ! Your an amazing young man, good shootin'

 Congrats!

I picked up on that "too far away" thing too... Yes, there is such a thing, even for a steely eyed young rifleman like Remingtonman!

Nice shootin' there, and a good looking 'yote too! Regards, Guy

Remington-man.....Congrats on the yote !
I'm laughing though ( I grew up around guns / reloading / hunting in the N.W. corner of CO...largest elk heard in the country ) My passion however is hunting elk with a bow when I have the time...BUT.
There is never a yote " too " far away to get some lead in the air.... yes I agree, maybe not enough " time "...
Again Congrats and thanks for the info with the .300

Good job Remman, congratulations on your coyote kill.
Sounds like the 40 gr V-Max has some splash factor.

Thanks for the comments guys. Well the yotes that were to far were only to far for the rifle at hand. They were probly 1000 yards+ running, so 22-250 just wont do it. If I'd had my 7RM, I probly woulda shot a couple times, maybe. Thats just a waste of shells IMO. And a lot of times, they dont give you enough time to even get out of the truck before there gone. The 40g vmax did ok for the range. Only reason were still using the 40g's is because we loaded up a couple hundred of them and were still shooting them up. I"ll be working up a 55g NBT load after the 40's are gone. Be a little better for coyotes past 300 yards.

Remman,

Let me know what you end up with for your 55 gr load.
I am working with Varget in my 700 VLS 1:14" twist and it may be ffy for the 55 gr BTs. What is your twist rate?

I"ll be using IMR-4895. I believe Ruger puts a 1 in 14" on there 22-250. I haven't tried any 55g bullets out of this rifle yet. Hoping for at least 3600fps and 5 shot .5" groups.
