22" barrel 270 Win and 140 AB's 3000+fps?

can I hit 3000 or better with a 22" pipe with the 140 AB and the following powders, R19, R17, Hunter and MagPro? Looking at a good ol 270 win, but want to hit at least the 3000 mark with these powders. What does QL say? anybody have a good load or two with a 22" pipe and 140's? accuracy is a must too.
 
Nosler's manual shows a max of just over 3,000 fps with the 140 gr bullet, but they're using a 24" barrel.

On the other hand, I never met a deer that could tell the difference between 2900 fps and 3000 fps...

 
I have some 270 loads w/ 140-gr BT ahead of RL-19 for a 22-inch Ruger M77R. They were worked up to first signs of pressure - stiffish bolt lift and slight extractor mark.

I will try to clock this load this weekend and report back w/ powder charge details.

I would say you have a great chance..

I would think you'd get an easy 2950 out of all of the powders you mentioned. Good luck. Please let us know how they shoot. Great information.
 
Retumbo can get 3100 fps from a 22" barrel. I bet the muzzle blast is awesome.

Is just my imagination, but has there been a real upturn in interest in the .270 win recently?
 
If you are getting stiff bolt lift and ejector marks you are already WAAAAAAAY over pressure. BACK OFF!

I was wondering the same thing.. Seems like alot of 270 shooters around.
 
I think interest in the 270 has never really waned. New bullets and new powders, however, are allowing maximizing potential as a hunting tool. From my perspective, it means that the 280 will provide as good (or better) results with a little research. I rather enjoy working with those cartridges that are less popular. However, I suspect that the current interest in the 270 is driven by the prospect of even better accuracy and potential as a hunting tool through availability of new and improved components.

I said they were worked "up to" pressure signs, but that doesn't mean I left it there!

In fact, looking at fired cases, no extractor marks, but primers are well flattened (not to the extreme edge, and no pin cratering.) Brass is WW.

I was mistaken, they are RE-22 loads - 58.4 grains. That is a full 2.0 grains beyond Sierra's max RE-22 load for a 140-grain bullet.

FYI Hodgdon's annual load book uses a 24-inch barrel for 270 Win, and not one of their 140-grain max loads quite reaches 3000 fps (limited to Hodgdon, IMR and Win powders of course.) I haven't considered Hodgdon data to be particularly conservative, in fact some of their max loads seem a lot hotter than others'.

DrMike's QuickLoad data are encouraging, but it's obvious caution is in order trying to squeeze 3000 fps out of 22 inches.

I will clock my RE-22 58.4-grain loads out of my 22-inch Ruger 77R this weekend. FWIW these rounds were loaded about 20 years ago.

I understand your desire to get above 3K, as I was in the same boat, but I wouldn't sweat it much if you don't achieve your target velocity. I loaded the max charge recommended by Nosler for the 140AB and 7828SSC (it proved to be the most accurate) and, wouldn't you know it, several years and many elk later it was only trucking along at a little over 2800FPS when I finally put it over my friend's chrony. I kind of laugh about it now, but that mild load kills like lightning.

It's "somewhat overbore" according to Ackley's reckoning, which means it can make good use of a barrel longer than 22 inches.
 
I bet you could hit 3K. I have a 24 inch barrel and I can hit 3k with 150 grain partitions out of my .270 win.

It is a 100% verifiably proven fact - and a "consensus" amongst experts, making it "settled science" - that no animal ever knew whether the bullet it received was going 3000 fps, or 2900 fps, when it left the muzzle.
 
I have been shooting the 270win since I was 15 years old so I guess this fall it will be 45 years. I have shot every big game animal in Saskatchewan with either the 130gr. Partition or the 130gr AccuBond. There is one species I have not hunted here and that is the woodland caribou :(. The only way you can get a tag is if you live in that zone which is way up near Northwest Territories.
Since shooting the CDL I really believe the 270win performs better with that extra length.

Are you bragging? Or complaining, Dan? :mrgreen: And you finally saw the light and got a .284 bore! And a .358 bore!
 
I guess Doc that shows that I am a slow learner :mrgreen:.
You would be surprised how many guys around here have never heard of a 280 let alone a 280AI.
The young guys around here are really into the RUMs and the AR type stuff.
Daryl who own the gun shop here stated that almost 50% of his business is assault type looking weapons.

Judging by the product reviews and how-to articles in A.R. and S.T. magazines, 95% of firearms must be either ARs or 1911s. Yawn.
 
I achieved 3150 with IMR 4064 and the 140BT's out of a 24" barrel M70. Unfortunately the pressure ( according to quickload) was too much so I backed off and am now at 3000fps.

I had zero pressure signs at the bolt. Primer was flattened just a touch when I was running 3150. And wouldn't you know it the accuracy on that load was around 1/2 MOA... damn the luck.
