After about 30 years I am revisiting the .220 Swift. Just picked up a new Ruger No 1 Varminter. Any new powders out there that bring a Swift to life. The powders I used years ago were IMR-4895, 4064, 4320 and H-380. I've got some 55gr Nosler Ballistic tips to start. Sure glad I kept my reloading dies.

Looks to be a number of powders that might work, Bruce.

That is a great cartridge. I may yet have to build a rifle that punches that particular cartridge.

Mike, thanks.

Reloder 17 looks like an interesting prospect, and one that I have in the cabinet.

Bruce, that new 220 Swift you just picked up is a genuine speed merchant. I can't wait for your range report with photos I hope .

Blessings,
Dan

Bruce, when I saw the title ".220 Swift" my first thought was "Dang, I'd like one of those in a single shot Ruger."

Then I read your post and got instantly jealous. Cool rifle, cool cartridge.

No, I have NO practical experience loading for one, I just like 'em.

I had the distinct pleasure about a month ago of shooting a 1952 Model 70 in 220 Swift. A fellow at the range hand one and was having trouble sighting a new scope in so I jumped in to help. He just gave it to me and said, "Try to get it on paper for me". I gladly obliged. Great little cartridge but my only concern with myself getting one was barrel life. It has to be worse than the 22-250 but I suppose that's more or less dependent on how it's loaded.

I never looked any further when using IMR4064.

38g of 4064 would do 3825fps and under 1/2 all day from the ruger target model.

My only complaint was that it is pretty hard on brass. I sold it after putting 700-800 rounds through it in a couple years. Was an awesome coyote killer and in my opinion thats where it really shines.

The local gun shop had the exact gun a couple months ago. It was in beautiful condition. Sadly I didn't have the $700.

HA! I was thinking the same thing! I have looked at the Rugers and Pre64's a bunch and would love to have the original speed demon!

RL17 looks really good in the Swift! Man, what a screamer it would be..

It has been about 33 years ago but I had a Ruger 77 Varmint in 220 Swift and used IMR 4064 with Speer 52 gr HP. Extremely accurate but I did not have a chrno but from trajectory should have been doing between 3800 and 3900 fps. I shot crows with it in East NC peanut fields. When you hit one it looked like setting off a cherry bomb in it. Just a poof of feathers.

Bruce,

Even though it's been discontinued recently(but plenty still seems to be available), take a look at IMR-4007ssc. Lots of folk, including myself, swear by this powder for their Swifts and 22-250's. I was a long time proponent of 4064, but since trying 4007, I've been a convert. It surpasses 4064 by about 150 fps with the 55 BT's and gives just as good, if not better accuracy. Thankfully, I'm very well stocked up on it.

Also, try IMR-4831. It provided extreme accuracy in my Swift, but was substantially slower velocity wise compared to 4064 and 4007.

Good luck with your new gun. The Swift is an absolute blast to own.

A sweet rifle you got there Bruce in a great cartridge. It warms the cockles of my heart. Another Ruger #1!!

You've still got cockles, David? And you let them get cold? Man, I'd think with that new build, hot cockles had all but dissipated!

My first loads are going to be with H-380 and Reloder 17 as I have both in the powder cabinet along with some 55gr BTs. But there are a lot of new .224 caliber bullets to try. First I've got to get a scope back from Leupold. They've had it two weeks and not a word.

Going with what you have is generally a solid move; it makes a lot of sense.

Which Ruger #1 did you get. Years ago I had a #1 in 22-250 Heavy barrel Varmit. I really liked the gun but Traded into a Lighter 22-250. I think at one time ruger offered a 28" #1, That in a 220 swift would be nice.

I shot up 80 rounds of Hornady factory ammo and now have once fired brass. I neck sized some and fired up my first handloads. My first two loads are as follows:
50BTH38041_5.jpg

50 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip
41.5 gr H-380
3948 avg velocity 9.75 std deviation
2.895 oal I think thats 0.010 off the lands
50BTH38042_0.jpg

50 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip
42.0 gr H-380
4028 ave velocity 9.125 std deviation
2.895 oal

This rifle seems to shoot pretty consistent but I'm still getting used to the Dragon trigger (4+ and creepy). Perhaps I'll choose to tinker with the bedding in the future. But first I need to find a gunsmith that will do a trigger job on a #1.
