222 Remington Magnum

John Savage

Welcome to the forum, glad you are here.

What barrel twist do you have in your 222 RM?
The .224 cal 60 gr PT needs a Min 1:12 twist and a 1:10 twist is even better yet.

You will want to push this bullet fast. I would think RL 15, Varget and IMR 4895 would be powders to look at.

Yeah, I have a 1-14" twist Savage 22-250 and you really have to push those 60gr'ers out of a 1-12 or better barrel to get great results. That 222 Mag is an awesome cartridge. What Model rifle is it? My cousin has a Sako 222RM with a 12X Leupold on it. It is one scary accurate rifle! Scotty

I am looking for load using a 60 grain Nosler Partition bullet. I tried a load using 20grs. of 4198 but it did not group well.

If it's a Rem factory 222mag like mine it has a 1/14 twist barrel. I forgot to add Sako made their 222mag with 1/12 twist barrel.

I've never fired 60gr in mine 55g is about the heaviest I've shot. I'm not sure if they make it anymore but Sierra made a 63gr Semi-Point Lyman manual 45 has loading data for that along with Ken Waters in Pet Loads.

Loading data I have 17.5gr to 19.5gr/IMR-4198 with 60gr to 64gr bullets
Same bullet 23gr to 25gr/IMR-4895
Might want to try 23.5gr to 25.5gr/H-335
24.5gr to 26.5gr/H-4895
21.5gr to 23.5gr/H--322

I'm shooting H-4895 in mine seems to be a good powder also using it in a 6x47 (6mmx222mag). You might want to call Hodgdon and see if they have any loading data using IMR-8208 that also be a good powder. Good luck

I've seen a lot of prarie dogs and a lot of coyotes taken with the .222 Mag -
My hunting buddy has had one since he was old enough to hold the gun up.
I think the only powerder that gun has ever seen is 748. It shoots the
55gr B-tip & B-Kings very well.

60 grain requires 10 twist to stabilize. My 40X has 14 twist and loves the 40 grain V-Max. I use either H335 or BLC-2 powder. I also use 2015BR at one time and had great result.

Thanks for the input, I am stepping the load up. The rifle is a Sako and has performed well with a 55gr bullet but is not doing as well with the 60gr. I will keep trying until I find the right one though.

It is a Sako L46 with a 1-12 twist. It has performed well with the 55gr bullet but I haven't found the right combination yet for the 60gr. I a have stepped the load up and am going to try pushing it a little more. Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the input, My gun is a Sako L46 which does very well with the 55gr bullet but I wanted to find a load for the 60gr for a little larger game. I have gotten some good input from several others suggesting that I step up the load so I am going to try that.

Thanks, Desert, Mine is a Sako L46, I am stepping up the load and trying some more, if that doesn't work I will go to 4895 or maybe Varget.
