Shot a quick ladder christmas afternoon with the 240 WBY, H414, and 70g tipped varmageddons. I'm going to try 3 shots each at 52.2 and 53.7 and 54 at 300 yards next time out based off where those series of shots landed in the group. Velocity was kind of all over the place with H414, not super impressed with it.

Quick little rascal though...

BTW, on Hodgdon's website, they show H414 as discontinued, as of 2020.

Yah I knew that H414 was discontinued. This was the only thing on the shelf that would work with these little 70g bullets. It's the same as W760, so if I can find something decent, I may still use it. I ended up finding 2# of RL17 a few days later that is well suited to the 70s/240 I may have to try. Also, Scotty brought it to my attention that I may need to try a mag primer with this H414 since it's a ball powder, and I may see a little better consistency in velocity and ES. Just something to tinker around with. Looking for a flat shooting coyote round.

I've got a few 2" groups at 300 yards with 53.4g and a length of 3.1" and 3.125" at a velocity of 3725-3750fps. I tried going longer 3.2" and 3.160" and shorter 3.060" and neither of them did any better at 3-4". The ES has dropped down to acceptable levels in the 20-25fps range since I put a fresh battery in. I think the ES problem during the ladder test was due to an almost dead battery. I still havent tried a magnum primer, but I may swap the CCI250 and try 3.1" and 3.125" just to see. It's still doing the 2 and 1 out thing, putting 2 within 1/2"-3/4" then throwing one out 1.5"-2" Since I've went through the range of seating depth, I kinda think it just is what it is at this point with these short bullets and not being able to come anywhere close to the lands. Maybe a primer swap might help. Havent tried any RL17 yet. Going to finish the H414 off before I try a different powder for now. 2" groups at 300 yards should still work out to 500 maybe 600 yards on dogs. So we'll see...

I saw a beautiful 240 Mk V Deluxe on sale at Sportsman's the other day and thought oh boy! so got me looking into it and I found something very interesting.
I am currently working on a load for the 243 using Suprform. I noticed on the hodgdon site that with lighter bullets(<80gr) and suprform or StaBall6.5 you can match or get very near the 240 velocity! :( now I need a better excuse

I noticed that as well...Kinda seems like they're hot rodding the 243 pretty good, and downplaying the 240s ability to push the same bullets 200fps faster. The powder selection and velocities are pretty dismal for the 240 on the Hodgon site. QL shows 6 powders that get 3800-3890fps with the 70g at max pressure. I dont think you're going to get that from a 243, close but not quite. They show 1 load on the Hodgon site with a 240 and a 70g at 3500fps with 7828 lol. Wheres the rest of the data, and why dont they load it to the same pressures as the 243...I know I didnt buy a 240 WBY to get 243 velocities anyway...

7828 shows well in the 240 WB with heavier bullets from 95 grs up... as you mentioned a little slow for the lightweight slugs though. Probably 4350 or similar burn rates would perform best with 70-75 gr bullets.

If you shoot any 100-105 gr bullets might give R26 a look if you can find it. Worked really well in my Vanguard with 105 AMax and was stable with my 10 twist. Sjb358 and Rem man 25-06 I believe have posted similar experiences with heavies and R26.
