anyone have any data for imr 4350 with a 100 grn hornady sp? , ive saw several places that imr 4350 is not a good powder for the .243 win because of hangfires . any info is much appreciated :?

I have a buddy that has used 42.0grs. of IMR-4350 with a 100gr. Hornady Boat Tail Spire Point or 100gr. Remington Pointed Soft Point Core Lokt bullet for years in several different .243's, including a couple semi auto Remington Model 742's. I don't recall him ever having any problems with the load or it's performance.

I did accuracy test some of his ammo in a 22" Ruger M77R "Liberty Model" .243 I have a few years ago. Accuracy was 1" or slightly less for 5 shots at 100 yards with an average muzzle velosity of 2935 FPS.

IMR gives a maximum load of 42.0 grains IMR4350 with the Speer 100-grain BT bullet. Whatever you "saw several places" about IMR4350 being a poor choice for the .243 is pure BS. I've used it for years in both the .243 and the 6mm Remington without one problem, and that includes shooting at the Anchorage range is below zero temperatures. I have had occasional hangfire issues with W760 in .270s with light bullets, but never IMR4350.

I also use IMR 4350 in my Encore 243 with a 15" barrel, and I've had no problems . I do get my best SD's with the lighter loads, though. I think the short barrel likes faster burning powders, but the light loads of 4350 seem to work well. My best SD's (less than 8.0) were obtained with 38.5 grains (5 shot group of .95" @ 50 yards). This load is with 100gr Rem PSPCL, Fed case, Fed GM match primers, distance from lands=.017".

The best group with 4350 was also with 38.5 grs but the SD was a bit higher (slightly under 12). This load shot a 5 shot group of .40" @ 50 yds. Again Rem PSPCL, FED case, but with Winch WLR primers, distance from lands=.015".

But my very best load is with IMR 7828 (44.4 grs) 100 gr Speer grand Slam, Fed case, WLR primer, distance from lands=.020".

Hope this helps

I worked with a buddies 15" .243 Encore this summer. I ended up loading 80gr. Speer Hot Core Spitzers over H-4895. 5 shot groups at 100 yards are running right at 1" or slightly under (when I do my part) at an average muzzle velocity of 2920 FPS. This is a very shootable load and my buddy plans on using it on both Coyotes and Whitetails this fall. I have used this bullet for a few years out of 6mm-223 Handguns on Whitetails with good success.

I also put custom Wood on this Encore. Neither of us liked the factory rubber grip and forend so my buddy ordered a Laminated Wood Grip and Forend from E. Arthur Brown, Co. out of Alexandria Minnesota. He ordered a Rifle Forend and I shortened and reshaped it for use on the Handgun Barrel.

In addition I also free floated the forend (well as much as can be free floated on a T/C that is). I sanded the Barrel Channel to have about 4 dollar bills clearance except for the two places where the screws go through the forend to attach it to the Barrel. Where the two attachment screws go through the forend there is sort of a saddle that sits against the barrel, otherwise the forend is free floated.

I am going to modify the grip a little, sanding in some finger grooves into it sometime this winter or spring. The grip is a little large for my tastes and it's owner has smaller hands than I do.

Have ya given H4831 a try just yet? This powder along with H414 is all I load under 100 gr bullets.
Like stated earlier,I've not heard of having "hangfires" in a 243. You DO need to make sure that you don't underload it. I've found, with my rifle, that Max loads work best.

i loaded up several loads ,starting with 40 grs imr 4350 and 100 grn btsp hornady found the 41.5 grns shot a 1/2 group @ 100 yrds so i am gonna let my 13 yr old daughter (she is 85 lbs soaking wet )use this for whitetail deer this yr , thanks for the info guys

I'm getting 1/2" groups using 41.5 grains of IMR4350 too. I get a chronographed muzzle velocity of 2872FPS.

I'm getting great accuracy to the tune of .5-.75" at 41gr. I haven't went to 41.5 gr. as I got the accuracy I was looking for at 41. Sounds like there's a trend here with 100gr. from 41-42gr. of IMR 4350.

daughter says 41.5 grs of IMR 4350 is fantastic ,lol , she got her 1 st deer with this load... [/img]

Hi
New to the forum

I have been using only AA4350 in my 243.
Is it the same as IMR4350 more or less?

Pretty darn close, if not exact. Most sources quote the Accurate version as being slightly slower burning, but the difference seems negligible and varies depending on who you are reading. IMR seems to have reduced some of their loading data as of late. Not sure if it is due to better pressure measuring methods, slight change in the powder itself, or simply the proliferation of lawyers. Case in point, I used to load 42.0 gr of IMR-4350 in several different .243 Winchesters (2 Model 70's and a Savage 110) with various 100 gr bullets. Never had a hint of a problem relating to pressure. Yet IMR's current data shows a maximum of just 38.2 gr of IMR-4350 with the 100 gr Hornady. My old Nosler No. 2 manual shows 38.0 gr of IMR-4350 as the starting load for the .243 with the 100 gr bullet! Accurate's data lists 39.0 gr as maximum for the 100 gr bullet for the .243. I tried that years ago, and found that I got better accuracy (and velocity) with 40.0 gr. I even tried a few at 41.0 gr, but velocity gain was nominal and saw no improvement in accuracy so I went back to the 40.0 gr load. Of course, your rifle may be different, so be sure to start low and work up gradually, watching for any sign of high pressure. Good Luck.

I don't know where you got that information, but it is inaccurate. Go to IMR's website and see that their maximum .243 load for IMR4350 and the 100-grain Speer bullet is 42.0 grains. Even their maximum data for the 107-grain Sierra bullet is 39.8 grains of IMR4350.

Several years back I had a Winchester WTR in 243 Win.
For 100 gr bullets, I used 42.0 grs of IMR4350 and got sub MOA.
For 70 gr BT's 39.0 grs IMR4895, accuracy was well under MOA.
I sold the rifle and bought a M700 Classic in 257 Roberts.

Well, Lonestar, I got that information from IMR! I am looking at a printout of the IMR Handloader's guide under the heading of Rifle Date showing Chamber Pressure in PSI:
.243 Winchester Win Case; Fed 210PR; Hornady 100 gr SP
.243" Dia; 24" BBL; 2.670" C.O.L
IMR-4895 34.0 2790 56000
IMR-4350 38.2 2850 56000
IMR-4831 39.5 2880 57000

And my copy of Speer No.12 also shows the maximum load for the 100 gr BTSP as being 38.0 gr of IMR-4350,
the maximum load of IMR-4350 for the 105 gr Round Nose as being 36.0 gr and the max load of IMR-4350 for the 105 gr SP and 100 gr Grand Slam as being 38.0 gr. (If you don't believe me I can scan a copy for you). I still stand by my statement that most sources have reduced maximum charges in most cartridges.

I have a Savage 110 in .243Win., and it does fairly well with a Sierra 100gr. SBT pushed along by IMR4350 39.1grs. for a velocity of 2800fps. It groups at .7" (5 at 100yds.) which isn't too bad for a sporter barrel. Best wishes.
