Henry 243 long ranger

My batch of purchased bullets and factory
FWIW, I have one rifle that I keep as a loaner, and have it sighted in with the 100gr Federal blue box that you have on the bottom. That load will shoot just a bit over 1" in my rifle, and has accounted for 4 deer by a young lady friend of mine. Also, my kids used the 100gr Remington CoreLokt ammo with success in the past.

I'm not home now to check but I seem to recall 42.0 grs. Rifle was a M70 XTR.

Thanks

Your 1:10 should stabilize anything up to about 100gr. My bolt gun (Marlin XS7) has the same twist, and I shoot the 95gr BT and 100gr Sierra GK quite well. As for deer,

This one was with the 95gr BT:

This one was with the 85gr Sierra GKHP:

I've killed them with the 100gr Sierra GK, as well. There are lots of choices besides the Accubonds for deer.
Nice… good eats right there

So here are my results of my factory loads

100 grn federal power shok good
90 grn Hornady precision hunter not so good
80 grn Winchester super X better than100 grn but could have been me

So I am thinking it doesn’t like the 90 grainers so much

What powder did you use?

Thanks Jer

It's been years since I messed with a .243. In fact, I gave the one I used for years to a son of a friend of mine when I moved from Nevada to Arizona. I'd settled on one load. Powder was the old milsurp H4831 which was quite a bit diffeerent from the current vesion. Bullet was the 100 gr. Hornady Spire Point and IIRC, it was pre-Interlock. I used it mostly for coyote and only four deer were taken with that rifle. I let four of my neighbor kids use the rifle on their first deer hunts and I acted more or less as their guide. The kids all made one shot kills with the .243.

Currently I have two, a Ruger #1A and a post 64 Winchester M70 that is definitely not a Featherweight. Other than running a few rounds through each a while back they're most safe queens now. Guess one of these days I ought to wake them up and se what they can do.

Thanks for your reply. I bought to have a rifle in between my 22 and 45-70

As Fred Bear once said…. You want to learn to hunt get a bow….. you wanna eat get a gun.

So I gotta a recurve and went hungry a few times 😩

So I decided to get a few plinkers… been eating game ever since… some with both😁

I see you have IMR 4350 . I use 41.5 grs with a 95gr NBT in my Ruger #1 and it shoots under an inch. Ran out of time before season last year and never chased it any further. It was just a load to zero a scope I threw together. The 95gr bullet is nasty on deer vitals.

Thanks I have loaded 3each of IMR and H4350 @ 42

Then 3 @ 42.5 of each

I just happened to do one at 41.5 in IMR

So we’ll see how they group

Gotta wait for the wind to calm down

Southern Alberta is a windy place😳

Thanks Jer

One thing I do is clean the barrel before switching to a different bullet. Being a new barrel copper build up might be hampering your groups.

So here’s tonight test. I am not a great rifle shooter ok. I am primarily a recurve hunter so keep that in mind.

I shot 42 and 42.5 in IMR 4350 and H4350

I had on loaded at 41.5 in the bottom right target.

Just let me know what you think.

Thanks Jer

i have a 243win 22" 8 twist, but in an AR. factory win cor-loc 100's are almost to long for the chamber. i haven't had time to work out the kinks, but do have a uni-throater to lengthen many different calibers if needed (24, 26, 28, 30 & 33 cals). so far i haven't needed any for the 22 or 27cals.

I had the Long Ranger in 6.5 Creedmoor and couldn’t get less than 1.5” with any factory ammo. Didn’t reload centerfire rifle at the time so I sold it. They’re a finicky rifle from what I gather.
