I'm starting to work up loads for my 25/06.
Thought I'd try Nosler 115 Grain Ballistic Tips with H4831sc and Hornady 117 Grain SST's with the same powder. Anyone have any recipes they think I should try in that caliber?
These loads would be for deer and antelope out to 500 Yards with 200 Yards being a close shot and if someone thinks I should use a different bullet I'd be willing to consider it. The reason for using H4831sc powder is due to being less temperature sensitive. I'm working up loads at 100 degree average temperature but my antelope hunt location will have an average high temp of 59 degrees.

Vince, wished I could help you more with the 25-06 but I only had one for a short period of time. Awesome cartridge though. I did have decent luck with RL22 and the 115 BT. Didn't try any 4831. Should be a good one.

Here is what QL suggests for H4831SC

Cartridge : .25-06 Rem.
Bullet : .257, 115, Nosler BalTip 25115
Useable Case Capaci: 60.107 grain H2O = 3.903 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.250 inch = 82.55 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch = 609.6 mm
Powder : Hodgdon H4831 SC

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 2.0% of nominal charge.

Looks pretty good to me honestly. H4831SC should be an excellent one if it is accurate for you. If you want more options, let us know. Good luck and show us some groups when you can.

You are on the right track, but if the H 4831 sc does not work for you maybe you should try IMR 7828.

I load a max load of IMR 7828 behind the 115 BT and use a Fed 215M primer. I get about 3150 fps and great groups. I have shot several antelope with this load and a mess of wild hogs, it works great.

If you should decide to try a screamer load try the 80 grain Barnes Tipped TSX over IMR 4831 or H 4350. I get 3600 fps and it drops antelope right now!

I have used the 25-06 for many years and both of these loads are tried and true in MANY different rifles.

WORK UP TO THESE:
52 gr H4831 or the SC version, CCI BR-2 primer, Remington case with either of the bullets as well as the Sierra 117 gr which is one accurate deer killing bullet, but you will have to find the seating depth that works best in your rifle.

49 grs IMR 4350. CCI 250 mag primer, Rem case, and either of the bullets. I use the 117 Sierra Pro Hunter flat base with this load and average 3000 fps from my Shilen 26" tube and it is bench rest accurate. Less than an inch at 300 yards for 3 shots on a calm day. I sight in my rifle 3" high at 100 yards and hold in the center of a deers shoulder out to 350 yards with no worry about shooting over or under it. BANG FLOP 99% of the time. I bean field hunt in NC.

My best accuracy and highest velocity with my .25-05 was with 120 Nosler Partitions and a fill case of IMR 7828-SSC (about 54.0/55.0 grains) with a magnum benchrest Fed 215 primer. Now this was a few years ago but I got an honest 3000 + fps from the .25-06 with this load and no real pressure signs. Plus it gave me better than MOA accuracy which was challenge with this particular Model 70. Please work up form below on this load.

Man, all this 25-06 talk makes me weak. The 25-06 is the only cartridge I really haven't gotten to work with as much as I want. The rifle I had kinda wore me down some. Might have to figure out a way to fix it!

I found my son's Ruger #1 .25-06 liked powder slower than H4831 with either the 115 and 120 grain weights. H1000 did well. But Alliant's RL-25 beat it in speed and accuracy, with both weights.

Vince my wife's 25-06 is a Remington 700 MTN rifle with the 22" barrel. I load 120 gr. Partitions in it with IMR4350 (49.0 grs.) , Winchester cases, and Federal 210 primers. It chronographs exactly at 3000 fps and shoots great. I think your H4831SC will work really well for you as that seems to be a good powder in the 25-06 also and any of those bullets you are thinking about will work very well. If I were going to load H4831SC I might use Magnum primers and work up my loads using them. With extreme temperature variances and sometimes being quite cold, the magnum primer should give a more consistent ignition.

A couple other bullets to look at would be the 120 gr. Partition, or the new 110 gr. Nosler AccuBond. That AccuBond will open at short or long distances, hold together up close, and has a BC of .418 which is even higher than the 120 gr. Partition at .391 BC. The 100 gr. Nosler E-tip with a BC of .409 is another one to look seriously at. It is an awesome bullet and would scream out of a 25-06! I just did some tests with 165 gr. Accubonds in my 30-06 and 90 gr. Accubonds in my 6mm Remington and have been really impressed with them. My son also shot a nice cow elk last year with his 300 WSM and 180 gr. AccuBond and the recovered bullet looked perfect. I saw one guy listed IMR7828, and they make a new one I believe that is IMR7828SSC so it meters better. That probably is a good one also. I'm thinking that you will find something with H4831SC that will work though and you won't even have to try any of the others. Good luck. That 25-06 is a great cartridge!

Must resist the 06 temptation. Must pick up the Roberts!!

Having owned the .250 Savage (Win Mod 70), .257 Roberts (Win Mod 70 and Browning High Power) and the .25-06 (Win Mod 70) and having killed deer with each, I am partial to the .257 Roberts because it is not that far behind the .25-06 now, with handloads and is somewhat more flat shooting and powerful than the .250 Savage.

Nowadays, you can push the 110 grain bullet at nearly 3100 fps in the Roberts and that is pretty cose to the .25-06. Plus, in my experience, the Roberts is usually easier to load for accuracy and I have not seem any difference in either cartridge's ability to kill deer. Just my $.02.

Retumbo is another excellent powder for the 25-06. No problem getting high load densitys w/this powder.

RL 17 or retumbo

My 700 classic loves rl17 with either 100 gr ballistic itps or 110 accubonds

there is only a 1" difference in elevation point of impact at yards between the two bullets and left and right is dead on

I've worked up some really good loads for my 25.06 over the years and have used lots of different powders with good results. I use RL22 with the Nosler 110gr AccuBond and the Speer 120gr Deep Curl, IMR4831 with the Sierra 117gr Pro Hunter and IMR4350 with the Speer 120gr Hot Cor. All these loads are accurate and kill deer like lighting as long as i do my part. Love the 25.06 it's an awesome caliber.

Yep, it is guys like you that don't help with the resistance to purchase....

Charlie, your right though, I would take either a M70 Featherweight in 257 or 25-06. Both of them would get used for the same thing really. I don't mind the shorter barrel on the 25-06 a bit either. I do like the 7x57 case alot. It feeds about as slick as anything I have shot up till this point.

Pretty good ballistics for both when they are ran the same..

You are on the right track, but if the H 4831 sc does not work for you maybe you should try IMR 7828.

!

or RL 22 / 25

I was looking ar RL22 last night and will consider it if H4831sc doesnt work out like I want it to.

I'll shoot the various 115 grain Ballistic Tip loads I worked up with H4831sc tomorrow.

I've got 5 rounds in half grain increments, of various powder charges to see what's most accurate. I'm not happy with the factory ammo I've been using, 1.35 - 1.5 inch groups. The factory loads I've been using have all been 120 grains and my barrel may prefer a lighter load, we will see.

Tomorrow, on the way home from shooting in the morning, I'll pick up a pound of R 22.

I shoot a 25-284 that uses the same load data as the 25-06.
I found Re25 and Retumbo work very well with the 115 NBT and 120 NPT
