I like to be different  , build a plinking, 200 yard deer gun; and somthing unique 8) . build a costom stock for both righty and lefty shooter in a pistol grip.Maybe even a bipod to help the grand children get a steady shot in  .My sniper app on my phone shows with a ballistic tip it would still have 1000 fps still left @ 200 yrds if left the barrel @ 2300 fps and with a 115 grn bullet. With todays powders that should not be a problem. If not Still easy to get with in range of a deer to use this gun.

...lot of deer been killed w/ .25-35's, I shot my first deer, & quite a few after that w/ a .32-20, so they're not "bullet-proof". 2300fps would put you just behind the .250-3000, & since you're building a single-shot, experimenting w/ the 100-115gr. bullets is possible...

Good luck! Hope you do it. That might be a really slick youth hunters cartridge. Might be able to put some steam on it with some of the new powders as well.

Gene... They had barrels with rifling back in your youth huh? Interesting..

Must have been one of those newfangled changes that were taking place during that time.

My Grandpa owned one as his only rifle. A long octagon barreled Winchester lever action. It was considered a high velocity cartridge in his day.

As a Honyocker in Montana, he used it mostly to keep the varmints out
of the chickens and vegetables, but he also used to to great success on annual elk hunts for meat.
