Looking for a rifle to play around with. Basically informal target shooting and some long range steel. Which would you recommend. Thanks

I have both and I like both. I can't say that one is superior (or inferior) to the other. Brass is a little easier to obtain for the .260 and the quality of Lapua brass is legendary, if brass quality is a consideration. Hornady brass is quite good, however; and since you don't often push the Creedmoor to the limits, it holds up well. It really comes down to a matter of personal likes/dislikes. I like them both, however.

I am looking at the savage long range rifle I don't want to spend an arm and a leg like I said this is going to be informal long range steel target acquisition and basically fun

...I think the creedmoor is a better thought out cartridge, meself. Fun gun, I'd take a good look @ the new Ruger American Predator series in 6.5 CM, & the price of a Savage LR isn't much off the price of a Ruger M77 Predator or Browning X-Bolt LRH. I've got a whole collection of outta the box Browning subMOA targets in .25 WSSM, 6.5 Creedmoor, & 7mm RM...

I like my Creedmoor so far. I'd look at brass availability if you were thinking of pulling the trigger soon.

Scott

On the brass for the 260, you run short you can neck up 243 brass or form from pretty much any of the 308 based cases. Just a thought.
Have no help on 260 vs 6.5 Creedmoor though. They're both pretty cool cartridges although my barrel on the way is a 260 AI.

They're both good cartridges, don't think you could go wrong with either. I debated for a long time on a 6.5 and ended up with a 6.5x47....too many good choices out there.

I prefer the 260 Rem but both are good rounds. In the Savage you can seat bullets out to around 3.0" instead of the 2.8" of other short actions so it gives you lots of room to load long and sleek bullets.

Just measured the detachable magazine on my Savage 260 Rem and it will fit a round as long as 3.0".

Probably the way to go, assuming you don't need an off-the-shelf rifle... otherwise, I'd go Creedmoor. Easier to manage COAL with long, slippery bullets.

I went with the 6.5x55 Swede, but that was more of a rifle decision than cartridge. Any of the three would fit with room to spare on the Model 70...

I have the first one in a lefty and really like it. The second one of course is nice too, you just need to decide if you would like the adjustable comb or not.

Not a Savage but people are raving about these. Not sure if you would want a shorter barrel though the savage's are 24" which is nice.

I would lean towards the 260 Rem as you have mire options for brass.

Why look at hunting rifles? You just described a target rifle.

You might seek this one the Model 12 Long Range Precision

Avail in .243, .260 or 6.5 CM... Hmmm... That might be the one.

That one looks perfect for what you're asking! The $1200 msrp is a bargain for a true target grade rifle, and it would be easy to maintain by a home/hobby shooter/gunsmith.

I think when you have an actual, purpose-built target rifle, that can lay strings of 20+ shots into the target with wonderful accuracy, you will really enjoy. It's considerably different from pushing a lightweight hunting rifle into the same task.

Just a thought.

You know my .308 Green Machine is mostly a range toy now. Someday, perhaps next barrel change, it will become a .260 or a 6.5 CM.

I'm guessing 6.5 CM.

Man out of stock Everywhere I looked! Now I definitely want one!
