264 Win Mag.....all of a sudden I want one

Nobody wants you or anyone to suffer that! I had a friend who fired an 8mm Mauser in a .30-8mm a few years ago and ended up with the extractor inside his neck! They had to operate to remove it but it hit nothing, praise the Lord, and he was okay. OT but relevent.

Kdn, glad you are giving it another try. It is a great hobby and you can build a lot of confidence in your shooting. I am sure you will succeed and really enjoy this great sport.

Blessings,
Dan

I really think to justify the 264 WM it needs at least a 26" barrel but that is just my thinking. I have a 27 3/4" Shilen on mine which is all the smith could get out of the 28" blank. I get 3350 fps with 130 Accubonds with 66.5 grs Retumbo and yes it is a real deer killer. You can about match with the 6.5-06 the 264 WM with a 24" barrels. The 264 WM is no more of a barrel burner than the 7mm Rem mag. Like has been said if you treat them right they will last a long time.

Ouch!!!!!

I remember whe the Model 70, Pre 64, .264 Magnums came out and the first production lots had 22 inch barrels. I had a friend who bought one of these rifles and never could match the bullet drop numbers that were listed for the cartrige. Later when chrono's became more popular, he found out why. This particular magnum really does need the 26 inch barrel, which later Winchester issues had in order to match published ballistics. The early issue 22 inch barrel left a couple hundred fps on the table.

I totally agree with the 26" barrels. When you reach a certain ratio of large case volume to small bore exit, the need for slower powders becomes more critical. Examples (to include but not limited to) 257 Wtby, 264 win mag or 300RUM. The longer barrels help burn all that powder and keep the muzzle blast down.

A 264 win mag with a long barrel (preferably aftermarket and gunsmith installed) and a lot of tweaking with reloads can indeed be an awesome gun! A buddy just texted me a pic of an Elk killed last night with his 264 win mag and a 140 gr VLD at 270 yards

Here is what a very opinionated but occasionally correct well known Steve has to say

As far as barrel burning this chart is a very general guideline but deserves some consideration

Built by Flint Hills Gun Works

Winchester M70 Classic Stainless action, factory trigger set to 2lbs.
Aluminum floorplate from PT&G
McGowan #3 fluted 25" barrel
custom walnut thumbhole stock
Wyatt extra long magazine box
Extra sling swivel with Rapid Pivot Bipod attachment
Talley LW aluminum rings & bases
Vortex Viper 30mm 4-16x44 scope with custom turrets matched to the load, bullet, and elevation, used to be a Leupold 4.5-14x40 with the VH reticle.
140gr Accubonds or Bergers depending on the game at 2950fps with 60gr of H4831. It's not a fast load but it's really consistent on velocity. I recently got the Bergers to fly like I want and my first 500yd group with them went in 1.5".

Now if I could just go back and take pics of my whitetail with my eyes open, I'd be set.

Yeah, hope it wasn't a fluke. I only got one group in before low light and increasing wind shut me down. I was testing the new turret and wanted calm conditions. Early results were good!

Results such as you posted, mcseal2, would please anyone. Very nice bucks.

Those are nice trophies and a very nice rifle.

I asked Shawn, or hinted to Shawn, that a Nosler Model 48 Legacy with a 26" barrel would be just the ticket for a 264 Win Mag offering.

Either way I'm good w/it. If they do offer it, I'll be one of the first to order it. If they don't, well...I'll save $2.6K

Thanks everyone.

I really like the Viper so far. It has been really repeatable on clicks and is very clear. I have the BDC reticle with 2 MOA wind marks also so I can print wind charts off the internet and use the reticle for my windage and click my elevation. So far it has been working well on my gong and paper.

I'll likely not top that muley since my opportunity to hunt them is limited, but I'll dang sure try! My 264 is built off the 300 win mag that took 4 of the 5 whitetail I have mounted before I had to re-barrel it so it is my old reliable favorite rifle. I like the 264 chambering better since it is a 9.5lb rifle and the 264 is plenty of gun for anything that lives in flat enough country I want to pack that heavy a rifle. I'm having the same guy build me a 270 win in a lightweight rifle off my Dad's old M70 for muleys in steep country. He also built my 204 Ruger and 6mm Rem that I hunt yotes with, and a 7 mag that I sold. The 300 win gave me a heck of a flinch in the process of shooting out the barrel, so I'm liking the light recoil of my current rifles. The ballistics will be similar and recoil mild. I'm still thinking I need to build another elk rifle someday in a 300 magnum but it will be a lightweight one with a brake, and hopefully shoot 200gr accubonds well. Then if I ever get to hunt something that justifys it I'll add a 375 Ruger, but that can wait a good long while.
