Well I have been wanting to have a custom rifle built for some time and stumbled into a new, unthreaded, unchambered barrel in 6.5 that I can't turn down.
It's a heavy sporter contour ,stainless with 6 flutes in it, measures 28 inches and .835 at the muzzle.1 in 8 twist which I figure ought to be perfect for 130 grain and heavier bullets.
It's going on a Mdl 700 Magnum action, which will be trued and the locking lugs will be lapped.
I plan on using it as a long range whitetail gun from elevated stands.

Having never had a rifle built,my question is regarding the recoil lug.
Is a factory Remington lug suitable or do I need to replace it with something else?

Thanks in advance,
Howard

It is always dangerous to pick up parts that can be assembled into either a rifle or into cartridges. Inevitably, it leads to the building of unneeded firearms and the expenditure of untold hours at the reloading bench and on the rifle range. This can only lead to more time afield and the acquisition of animal pelts and various meats to be enjoyed throughout the year. Yes, the factory lug on a Remington will be sufficient.

You being the Doctor and all, could the diagnosis be terminal RADD? :p

Thank you for your sage advice, I greatly appreciate it.
Howard

You really should replace the recoil lug.
Remington uses a stamped recoil lug and they are not usually perfectly flat.
A ground recoil lug will only cost you around $25.00

Any recomendations?

Congrats on the 264! The force is getting too strong to resist around here! Scotty

Hollands, Tubbs, Badger Ordnance, Callahan.
I personally use Hollands in all my builds but only because he taught me.
Standard thickness is fine or you can get thicker ones. I found it really does not matter
It's been quit a while since I built rifles and it looks like they have gone up in price.
They are around $35.00 now

Tubbs and you're done. Sounds like a nice rifle in the works.

Velvet Ant hit it, get a new properly surface ground one for 25-35$

Kiff makes quite a few too (Pacific tool & gage),

Howard,

Congratulations on the 264.
My 280 AI has a Tubb recoil lug, its about 3 time bigger than the Remington stock recoil lug.
Also consider getting the action pillar bedded into the stock.

JD that's already on the list. In fact a new HS Precision or Bell and Carlson may be in order.

All this 264 talk is giving me the shakes! I need to unsubscribe from this particular posting. It is making me week! Scotty

It is getting tougher! All I need is one good TDY/TAD trip and I will have enough squirreled away for that M700 CDL 264. I imagine after the first of the year, if there are any still around, I will grab one. You know, just in case. Scotty

Here is the one I am eyeballing.

I just sent in my 100.00 rebate for the M700 CDL 25-06. Not a bad deal. If I had of found the CDL 264 a day earlier, I would have had that instead. They are always going to make a 25-06. Seems the 264WM comes and goes. I think the blued fluted barrel is SHARP! Scotty

What's you waiting on. That is a steal!

Scotty,

Go ahead an buy it. You'll have a great start on a CDL collection. They ain't Featherweights, but they are still nice rifles.

Plus if it does not work out for you-----fat chance---- you can sell it anyday!

Yeah, I would, I really want to, but with Christmas right around the corner, I think I am going to wait until after the New Year. I REALLY want it, but with a rifle without a scope or dies, I am going slow. Hopefully they stick around. That seems like a great price! Who knows, maybe Santa will come earlier! Scotty
