.270 130 gr. Solid Bases -- with and w/o cannelure

I'm curious.

I've tried the 130 grain .270 solid base bullets, and love them. They're wickedly accurate.

But the seconds I bought have a cannelure, while the "firsts" do not. There seems to be no difference in either accuracy or POI (or if there is, I sure can't tell).

Does anyone know what the logic and history are behind producing some with, some without the cannelure? Is it as simple as they were produced as components for different ammo manufacturers? If so, does anyone know which ammo manufacturers they might have been?

This is only a matter of curiosity for me -- it's not like I'm not going to use them.

Thanks,

Brian

Brian, this has been touched on here before, and it can be puzzling.

The firsts that Nosler sells for the most part do not have cannelures, period. However, a lot of the seconds that they sell were made to be sold to Federal or Winchester or some other ammo manufacturer. These companies demand a cannelure on the bullets so that they can apply a crimp at the factory.

I buy a lot of seconds from Nosler and have only had one batch that I felt were not quite up to their usual standards. The cannelures are really of no significance. Pay no attention to them and seat the bullets to the normal OAL.

Hope this helps, RF

Thanks -- it certainly does.

I really appreciate your response, and I'll make sure I search the site before I ask another question. I should have done so in this instance. My bad.
