Just tooling up to start reloading for my 270 and I was given some 140gr SST, 140gr AB and also have some 130 TTSX. Was thinking of starting with RL22 and 7828. Should I start with factory OAL or load to .050 from the lands? It has a non freebore Pac-Nor barrel.

If your magazine permits loading to approximate the lands, I would look at starting between 0.020 and 0.010 inches off the lands for the SST and AB. For the TTSX, allow more jump. It will likely produce a node somewhere between 0.050 and 0.100 inches off the lands. If the magazine restricts your OAL, load to the magazine and depend on fine tuning the load with the charge.

you are going to get a million opinions on this one and nobody is really wrong. I never go closer than .025 to the lands. And in a lot of cases ( :lol: ) that won't even permit loading in the magazine so they have to be back even further.

You say load .050 off the lands... well have you measured that distance yet? In many platforms .050 away from the lands is actually shorter than SAAMI OAL.

I was just fine tuning a rifle for a gentlemen. It was a WSM Winchester rifle. His land distance was 2.905. SAAMI max OAL with a Nosler bullet in this application was 2.860 .... See what I mean? If you went .050 off here you would be .005 under SAAMI OAL.

That doesn't mean you wouldn't get a good result...I am just shedding some light for you that using .050 as a benchmark might be counter productive if you are using that .050 "to get close"...becasue it won't really be that close. :wink:

Speaking as one who's sent a lot of bullets downrange from my own 270Wby, I'd take a hard look at the distance to the lands, and start at least .010" off with lead core bullets, and at least .050" off with monolithics, regardless of SAAMI spec. I can tell you from personal experience that monoliths like (or nearly require) .050-.100" of jump to get best performance and accuracy. Barnes recommends starting at .050" off the lands, as well.

If you have a non-freebored throat, I'd also caution against using max published data from some sources. The lack of freebore is going to give slightly to markedly higher pressures versus a traditional Weatherby chamber with freebore, and it will depend on the bullet and powder used as to where the pressure falls along the continuum. Lastly, I'd expect to get max pressures below the velocities achievable in a factory freebored chamber, as well. Look for something in the low to middle 3300fps range with 130gr, and about 100-150fps lower for every 10gr of bullet weight you add. Do not start with the max published charges for IMR7828, whatever you do. You will not be happy with the results, I'm sure, as those loads are pushing the envelope of reality in my factory freebored chamber.

I think you'll find RL22 and 7828 to be good choices, as would be Accurate MagPro and H4831. I had good accuracy from the 130gr TTSX over MagPro, but at lower velocities than I'm getting similar accuracy from the 130gr E-Tip and 7828ssc. Throw the reloader 22 back in the closet and stick with the IMR 7828. Tried the re22 and velocity is 200 fps slower than what is being achieved with the 7828. Accuracy is excellent , also with the 7828. The re22 gives acceptible accuracy, but the velocity sucks.

I cant get IMR7828 to work in my gun.
