270 Win 150gr Btips

It's just the way my mind works, but I think that 150s are perfect in WSMs and Weatherbys, 130s are right in the standard Winchester. 140s could go either way.

Just waitin for the weather to get nice. Ive got 130gr ABs loaded up with CCI200s, win brass, and 57.5, 58, 58.5, 59, and 59.5gr H4831sc. Tonight I loaded up 150gr Btips with 53.0, 53.5, 54.0, 54.5, and 55gr H4831sc with win brass and CCI200s. Cant wait to get out and shoot them.

I use H4831SC and 140 ABs for the .270 Win, and it makes groups like the above.

Went out to the range this afternoon. I didnt get to shoot the 150BTips but I shot the 130gr ABs. Nothing super impressive yet but it shows some promise already with only 30 rounds down the barrel. Here is a pic of a group shot with a load Im going to play with more.

I think Im running into a problem though.I didnt shoot the Btips today because as I was shootin the ABs, I noticed that the tips were gettin all smashed up. I seated the bullets at 3.300" which I thought was sufficient but the rounds can move pretty freely in the magazine. I thought about seating them deeper but now that I think about it, that will only give them more momentum to hit the front of the mag. Any tips to stop damaging the tips or is it something I shouldnt worry about to much?

DT, I wouldn't worry about the tips too much. Were they getting smashed hard, or just a little rubbing?

Looks like the 130's will come around for you. Can't beat the speed on them either. I can't think of a better deer load in your area.

Never had that problem so I couldn't tell you. What is your magazine length on that rifle? With all of mine I have more than ample mag length. .280AI I got 3/8 of an inch or so. On the AR-10 I got .005" I haven't seen any problems so I don't know what to tell you.

They tips arent getting smashed to the point where they are seriously deformed but enough to knock little pieces off and make the first little bit of the tip flat. I should have kept one and measured it but I didnt think about it at the time. I guess if I do my part, I will only need one shot and not have to worry about the others! :grin:

I would make a dummy round that just barely fits the mag. Cycle the dummy thru the action to ensure proper feeding. Most .270,s will accept 3.340 for those clip feds.

I just went and tried some of my loads for my M77 that are seated at 3.340 and they fit. I think that length will work better since there isnt much room for the rounds to move back and forth in the mag. Maybe they wont get so beat up. Now I have 25 rounds of Btips loaded up at 3.300 still. Maybe Ill pull them and reseat

Good job. The extra length may shrink that group size as well.

Probably improve your accuacy a bunch too JMO.

FWIW - I struggled for a few years with the 140gr NAB trying to mimic the accuracy and velocity I was getting from the Federal .270Win factory load using same. I eventually found that my accuracy improved significantly when I made the AB's jump more then I had previously used for any other bullet. I tried using this approach with a 180gr AB load in a 30-06 which shot ~1" and it tightened up and was more consistent also. Same with a 160gr AB load out of a 7mm-08 that I had given up on. Shortened the OAL and now it too shoots at 1" when before i couldn't keep it under 2".

150 gr in 270 win my load is rl22 58 gr and GM215 Federal Match Mag primers.
Another great powder it is N560, Norma MRP. For some reason magnum primers work very well.
with 22 in tube I get about 2900 fps accurate. Works well also with 150 gr VLD Berger bullets and 150 Partitions.
