I just got done with accuracy and chronograph test with a model 700 Remington with a 22" barrel. First up was H4831sc with the 130 gr. B.T.(60 grains) and it grouped 4 into .680", then chrono'd at 3050 fps average. Next was the same bullet with 64 grains of H1000--- It shot 4 into .750" and chrono'd 3050 fps.

I will warn you that you must fill the H1000 with a drop tube as it fills the case! I also used CCI 250 primers with the H1000 and 200's with the 4831sc. Both were seated at 3.305 oal and shot and chrono'd together. The extreme spread between the 2 loads was a whopping 6 fps 3048 low and 3054 high.

So anyone wanting to know if H1000 is too slow for the 270, here you go!

How do you think it would work with 150's. Sounds pretty good with 130's.

I don't know, but I'll bet it would be good at 63 grains!

The way the .270 shines with slow burning powders, it can pretty much be thought of as very similar to any of the small bore magnums... Excellent velocity potential.

I've seen some VERY interesting velocity figures for the 150 gr bullets, slow burning powders and longish barrels... Not my rifle, just... interesting.

Also saw the .270 shooting through steel plate at 300 yards, while my .308 was bouncing off. Again, interesting...

Thanks for the update Oldman. The results are interesting. To be honest, I do not see any advantage to using H1000 in the .270 with 130,s. Magnum powders and primers are not necessary to give the .270 some getty up go. You did show that it will work with a drop tube. Good info.

With the 150 ABLR coming out, I wonder if I should have my .270 Win freebored .250 and have the magazine Partition removed from my Model 70?

After seeing what a little freebore and a long (standard) action with .30-06 magazine length did for my .257 Roberts. It would be nice to know where you could go with a slightly freebored .270 Winchester full length with the 150 gr ABLR Nosler bullets? It might show some new life and potential for the old girl (1949 Model 70)?

OM, thank you for the information on the 270win :) it is always a good thing to keep on experimenting!! Thanks again.

Blessings,
Dan

A while back I loaded up a batch of 140 NBT's with H1000 for a friend with a BBR. 62.0 gr of H1000 netted 2740 fps with .75" group. He was happy with this so I stopped there.

H4831sc is perfect in my 270 Win with 150 and 160g bullets but too slow nearly for the 130 grainers. With the 130s I need to pump 62g and more in there to match speeds I can get with H4350.

I think I have a slightly large chamber and possibly a slightly larger bore than most other 270s. Case capacity of my fired brass is nearly 70g of water.

It is a very accurate rifle however and with 160g Partitions at 2850fps and 130g Partitions at 3100fps, it is a great big game rifle.

Thanks for the H1000 data. That powder is known as AR2217 here and I have not had the chance to try it. I suspect it would be too slow in my rifle but good to see it worked well for you. Always good to have alternative loads if supplies run short.

The only reason I tried the H1000 is I have a couple of cans with no use for it. My rifle has a 22 inch barrel so it shouldn't shine with a slow powder like this, but 3050 is about what you will safely get with any powder. I will use it if my supply of H4831sc runs low and I have lots of magnum primers to go with it.

Well, just for the heck of it I tried some H1000 with 140 B-tips at 63 grains, cci250 primers. grouped under an inch at 100 and 2970 fps. I have found a use for my H1000 powder! Absolutely no pressure signs, but it does kick a little more than 130's. May not be any better than the other best 270 powders but it's no slouch either!

Sounds like another great load, good to know for the future :) excellent performance there is a reason the good old 270 Win is still popular.

Agree. 2970 is no slouch at all. A lot of powders work well in the 270. Looks like H1000 is doing just fine as well. I have to admit your velocity is better than I would have guessed it to be. good info for sure. I,m tempted to try H-1000 with the 160 PT just for kicks.

I too have found slow powders for the 270 to be performers. I am loading 140 ABs with magnum and fed 215 primers for an average velocity of 3110. Lookin at burn charts magnum should be around the burn rate of rl25. Of course reloaders mentallity makes me wonder what rl25 can do with the 150 ABLR

I tried RL25 with 150 Hornady interlocks, shot good groups but was really slow. I don't remember what the speed was, but it was slow enough I never tried it again. It works really well in my 300 Wby though!

I have a box of .270 140 Partitions which I traded for. I am going to try them with IMR 7828 SSC and see what the accuracy and velocity yields for my .270 Win rifle.

On the other end of the spectrum, last weekend my 22" Model 70 printed neat little 3/4" triangles with 130 Partitions and H4350, and clocked 3,020 over the chronograph. A very efficient case across a wide range of burn rates for sure.

Great information, and thanks again for sharing your results!

OT3 keep me in the loop about your loads with 7828 ssc. That was gonna be the next powder I try. Interested in what it can yield out of the 270.
