Pre-64 Model 70 .270 Range Day

Cajun ain't hard to understand. Neither is Aussie! But that French on the other hand is quite another tongue.

Jake, Cajun, I don't talk. Canajun, I talk. I was a loss while in Louisiana down in the Bayou Teche country.

Guys,
Found a pre-64 in .270 at Cabela's before I split for $600.00. She was pretty well wore out, but sound. I think she'd seen her fair share of the Olympic Peninsula's frequent showers. Didn't have an ounce of bluing or finish left on her, the checkering was wore out, and the barrel interior was the same color as the Statue of Liberty, but the action was good to go and the price was right. Frank from Bartlein is putting on a #2 Bartlein contour chrome barrel and squaring her all up. Al Lind is going to turn a blank I've got to one of his patterns and give me some pointers on final shaping and finishing. He's about as nice as they come. We had a beer at his shop, talked about some of the gun making greats, like his friend the late Don Allen, fly fishing, elk hunting, and favorite calibers. For a rifle nut like me, it was like meeting Elvis. His trophy room is something else! He showed me some of his personal rifles in his safe and I about fell over.
My intent is to have a "go to" rifle, like my hero Jack O'Connor. He used his #2 rifle so much that it became an extension of him. Call me crazy, but that's the coolest rifle I've ever seen, as a beautiful rifle that has had an extensive hunting life and and the nicks, dings, and wear to prove it has more character to me than an immaculate safe queen. To keep it unique, I'm thinking about having Paula Malicki (Al Bieson's granddaughter) put a Zia (think NM flag) on the bolt handle that gives way to four panel checkering and possibly an EOD Crab on one side and a Diving Officer insignia on the other side of the stock cross bolt. At least that's what I've got going on in my head now. I'm thinking Wiliams bottom metal as he's another really nice guy that's putting out a great product.

As far as velocity goes on those 140ABs, it's actually pretty underwhelming. I chrony'd them before I left and I think I was around 2800 fps. As much 7828SC as I stuff in the case, I thought I'd have a lot more speed on it, but that's where the accuracy is at and none of the elk I've shot with it have seemed to mind. With this new rifle, I might start from scratch with Nosler brass (damn it's nice) and see how RL22 and 7828SC work with that 150ABLR. I guess a fellow could hope for 2950 fps with a 24" pipe (I'm always an optimist), but, as with my other rifle, I'll stop where the accuracy lies. Also, beautiful rifle Scotty. Welcome home and glad you're keeping it real taking that 338 out in the elk mountains where she belongs.
Take Care Friends and Merry Christmas!

Joe, that sounds like a great project. It will certainly be a handsome thing when you're finished. I do agree that with a longer pipe, 2950 fps is a reasonable expectation, though there are no guarantees on accuracy. Accuracy is where accuracy is. Again, you have a pretty good handle on the fact that elk are incapable of distinguishing between being killed with a bullet that is 100 fps slower than maximum velocity. Slow and accurate had assuredly killed plenty of elk. Have a blessed and merry Christmas.

Joe, that sounds like one awesome build buddy. I really dig the EOD insignia on it. Great idea mate! You gotta get some before/after pictures for us.

Joe, I think that IMR 7828 may be too slow for your rifle's chamber. I shoot 130 grain Partitions with 55.0 grs of IMR 4350 and for the 140 grains, would use 58.0 grs of IMR 4831. You should be able to get to 2900+ fps with the right load and by not straining your action.

I've used H-4831, IMR-4831, IMR-4350, RL-19, RL-22 and IMR-4064 in my Rem 700 with the 140gr AB and cannot get to 2900fps without extractor swipes and/or stiff bolt lift. Used Rem, Win and Fed brass and CCI, Rem and Fed primers. I recently got my hands on some IMR-7828 for the 25-06 and will try it out in the 270Win this winter. If it offers nothing outstanding I will leave this aspiration and be content with 2850fps and excellent accuracy. Otherwise I'm going to shoot out a good tube and really gain nothing more than achieving my first reloading goal I set 10 years ago.

Sounds like an awesome build! I can't remember if it was in "The Hunting Rifle" or "The Art Of Hunting Big Game In Norh America," but Jack O Connor used to get 2,950 out of a 150 grain bullet in front of 58.5 grains of 4831. He said his 130 grain load was 62 or 63 grains of 4831 for 3,150, all in a 22 inch barrel. Seems pretty hot! He said he used to have to tap the cases as the powder was going in to fit all the powder in.
I was just in lewiston last week looking at #2. It is so awesome! All of his rifles there are so cool! I would recommend that place to anyone!

Sounds like an incredible build with the "touches" you are wanting to add to the rifle. You may want to try some 3100 if you can find it. I loaded for a friends .270 and that shot very well and gave him close to 2900 fps with a compressed load. Stay safe buddy!!

I don't think you'll have too much trouble Joe. There are a bunch of powders that should get you into the 2850-2900 FPS range with a 150. If the stated BC is close, that kinda load would be packing 1500FTlB's out to 600 or more. Pretty awesome way to pump the old 270 Win up...

My pre-winnie is from 1947. It has the old type safety. I found the rifle completely trashed after a life of hard hunting. The barrel was worn out to a smoothbore almost and the gunstock looked liked it had been used in trenches of Korea & Vietnam..however the action was slick.
A new barrel from Lilja, new claro wood, Jewell trigger and new caliber(.270wea) and everything was agin ready to go.

The .270Wea does quit well. Bullets used was a 150grain NOSLER Par. loaded to 3280Ft/sec from the 27" lilja barrel. Its a killer. I did a few good kills up to 400yards. Everything just drops.

Hej Jens -
What a beautiful rifle! Does it shoot MOA or better? What year did Winchester go from a tange safety to the 3-position safety? My 257 AI was built in '57 and that has the 3-position.
