Pre-64 Model 70 .270 Range Day

The 270 is a great round too Mike, although that isn't a gun you would want to rip apart though, lot's of others around for that.

Gerry,

My concern is that I would like the round. I have to confess that I've recently pondered picking up a .308! It must undoubtedly be a sign of onrushing senility. :?

Or too much time firing the big boomers the guys at Corlane's build :)

You weren't a target of opportunity DrMike. My day here is almost done, just a few more young'uns to convert for the cause and I can hang it up and go to my just rewards?

Oh, Charlie, I think they thought I was a target of opportunity. I had just ordered in a new Model 70 and a Hart barrel for a build I'm doing, so I was loathe to destroy the pre-64 and I didn't want a .270. I am rethinking that position, however. I wonder if I'm not being just a bit obtuse. :?:

Its okay DrMike, I only mentioned you because of your stash of Model 94's, not meaning to put a target on your back for a Pre 64 Model 70.

No thought of discrimination for me. I was too young to think of the .270, 1949 era, Model 70 as anything but an custom rifle opportunity when I bought it with its cobbled stock,40 years ago. After killing a hundred or so deer with it, I still like the caliber pretty well for some things.

The pre-64 Winchester is the finest. It´s a joy to see someone still use this kind of rifle as their main rifle.

Thanks for sharing.

My work here is getting done, slowly. If I could proselytize to and convince many here of how good the Pre-64 Model 70's are and how relatively cheap some are now compared to a couple of years ago. If I can get more of you guys converted and bought in, my work here is getting done! Every one of you who converts to a Model 70 makes me feel good about my life of owning these terrific rifles.

You have done well Charlie. That's what my 338 is built on. I found an action for $500 in 270 and knew it was too good to pass dropped it in a Micky and screwed on a Pac-Nor. I can't complain. Those triggers are pretty nice as well.

Todd,
Nice shooting and nice rifle! I don't think there's anything finer in the field than a pre-64 M70 in .270 Win, especially one that shoots like that. I bought a beat up one over ten years ago for $500.00 to use as a donor action. I put some cheap factory 130s down the pipe and was pleasantly surprised at the group. Ten years and many rounds later, she still keeps three 140 grain ABs, on top of a stout load of 7828 SC, inside of 3/4". Of all my rifles, she's my favorite. Wearing a 3x9 Leupold MK AR, she is deadly on steel out to 760 yards. I'm really looking forward to getting home and testing the water with the new 150 ABLR. Thanks for sharing about your rifle.
Joe

PS-Found a donor (hands down the most beat up pre-64 I've ever seen) at Cabela's before I deployed. She's at the Bartlein shop getting a new tube screwed on. Al Lind said he'd help me with the stock when I get back. I can't wait to get home and work on her and let the good times roll!

Joe, thats great about the donor! Give us some details of the Bartlein getting screwed on..

Glad you were able to check in buddy.

Sounds like the work goes on. People are finding out for themselves how well these old fossils shoot, if given half a change. My .270 MOdel 70 still shoots 3/4 inch groups after 63 years and 40 years after I had it restocked. They didn't get to be "The Rifleman's Rifle" being bad.

Good to hear from you, Joe. I'm with Scotty, give us the details on your build.

Awesome! Can't wait to see pics. I agree the 150 ABLR should be pretty awesome in the .270!

This is the thing: the trigger is pretty darn good. I cannot believe the Browing redesigned th Model 70 trigger as it was as fully adjustable, as perfect and compliant as any trigger ever had been, certainly on any factory rilfle ever made, even the Mauser with a good commerical single stage trigger is not any better. It also had endless adjustment until you had it where you wanted it. No creep, no overtravel, lock time a little slow but the is a spring kit for the bolt.

My triggers on my Model 70's and my Mausers are all set the same. I can't even tell which one I am shooting unless I look at the rifle or cartridge to confirm it. I do not have a gun with the new Model 70 trigger so I can not comment on it. People say that it is a good trigger and I believe that. I just don't know why they messed with the original.

I have a Browning High Power rifle (since Browning redesigned the trigger) and it is not any better a trigger than the original Model 70. This trigger redesign issue must be a French thing? This, since the Flemish own Winchester now (Herstal, Belgium)?

I had a couple of bosses when I was an engineer that always had to put their fingerprint on a design. They would come around and make you change some stupid facet of your design to suit them. I can not remember one time that their will or cnges improved the machine, not once! The French are kind of like these guys.

I am a novice to rifle building, but I thought to build a 338 you had to start with a magnum action, not just a long action? Just curious because I have passed up quite a few magnums looking for long actions as a donor for a 7x57.

What velocity are you getting out of those 140's?

Jake built a 338-06 AI. The long action was what he needed for that particular build.
