I'm working on a 270 WSM shooting the 150 ABLR for my father in law. I have it shooting pretty well with 62gr. (can cover three shots with a dime) and 63 gr (.5-.75 MOA) of H1000. According to the Nosler book that should be in the 2950-3050 range. I finally shot the 62 gr load over a chrony last night....2750 fps. I'm running a 26" barrel, and getting 200 fps less than the book says with a 24" barrel.

I am having to jump them a long ways to get them to shoot, and I'm getting soot clear back down onto the shoulders of the cases. 63.5gr of H1000 is book max I believe. Primers (WLRM) are fairly flat, but it sure looks like I'm pretty low on pressure.

I need to bounce a few thoughts around with you guys as to what might be going on.

My father in law is pretty happy with it. We gave it to him last weekend for fathers day and I took him out last night to shoot it. He hit the 300, 500, and 600 yard gongs on the first shot. So he could care less about what it's doing as long as he can keep whacking things with it. But.....It is bothering me. Something just doesn't seem right.

I'd be inclined to adjust your load upward. To be certain, the data Nosler lists (and the data in the Nosler 7th Manual) places H1000 as a maximum charge. Their data is pressure-tested, which should not be casually dismissed. However, in light of the lower velocities and the projection by QuickLoad, I'd adjust the charge upward to approximate projections of velocities nearing 3050 fps at least.

WOW! That kind of puts things into perspective a bit. Thanks Mike. I'm hoping I can get it dialed in by October.

We are going to be starting wheat harvest today so my beloved rifle time is going on hold for the next month and a half. If all goes well I will have a week or so between alfalfa seed and onion harvest to crank a few things out.

I really like Nosler bullets but I am usually 100fps and usually closer to 200fps behind their numbers. I would love to have their magic barrels though.

That would be a screamer at 3100 Jake. Can't imagine that 150 ABLR around 3100 wouldn't kick butt on just about everything buddy!

Can you get 69 grains of H1000 in there with the bullet seated the way you have it Jake?

I was getting very close to 3300ft/s with 140gr AB's and Retumbo in my two 270WSM's. One rifle LOVED the Compressed load of 71.0grains.

I am tempted to try the 1050's in my "new-to-me" Sako m75ss 270WSM that I bought couple years ago...never shot it yet, but I know my Tikka T3 LS 270WSM's shot great !

I had the same problem with my two 270wsm, both 24" barrels one custom one factory. They just always seemed slow FPS when i started hitting pressure signs. I switched to RL25 to brake 3000fps with a 150gr bullet, tried several powders before that. Gave up on the 150gr LRAB and started shooting the 165gr matrix VLDS. loaded them with IMR7828 for 2880fps. G1 BC=.650 tested. killed a few pigs with them, DROP in there tracks.

I'm hoping that I can get out tomorrow early morning to try some new loads. I was able to get up to 69 grains in the case, but it was packed in there pretty good.

Worked up to 69 gr. 66 showed the most promise. Running right at 2930 fps. Not what the 270 WSM is capable of, but good enough. I got a 1" group with this load. I adjusted the seating depth longer and that was the wrong direction, so I'm going to try .005" and .010" shorter. One of those two should do the trick. If not, my father in law can't and more than likely will never be able to shoot the difference between 1 MOA and .5 MOA, but it would bother me if I didn't try.

I showed him a half inch group that the rifle shot doing 2740 fps. "Hell, I couldn't do that at 50 yards" was his response. He was tickled with the rifle.

Seems like your gas seal needs adjusted via a powder increase, will also correct slower velocity readings.

Hogdon show the following for a 270 wsm with a 150 grain bullet.

Hodgdon H1000 .277" 2.740" 64.0 2,864 54,600 PSI, 67.5C 3,001 62,800 PSI

2900 seems fairly reasonable for the bullet Jake. I have never ran H1000 in anything other than my 7mm MSM, but it does fantastic in that rifle.

Hopefully tweaking out the seating depth a little will bring it around for you. I do love me some 270 WSM...
