Well I was able to get away for a quick range session. I loaded up 18 150gr ABLR's with 7828SSC. I shot over a Shooting Beta Master set up at 12 feet from the muzzle.

Scotty was kind enough to take my case capacity measurements and send me some Quickload data to start with. His numbers came out that 59.5 was the maximum.

I loaded 3 rounds each at 56.5, 57.5 and 58.5 with Fed 210 primers and a depth of 3.375. My lands are at 3.390 and the mag box is right at 3.380 in my Winchester M70 Classic Stainless. I also loaded identical loads with Fed 215 magnum primers.

56.5 is the sweet spot. 57.5 the groups opened up, and 58.5 the bolt was sticky and the primers were severly cratered.

Here are the results. I fired one "fouler" of 130 BT silvertips at the bottom of the target. Shots 2, 3, and 4 are the three shot string.

56.5 grains with Fed 210: 3007 FPS avg. Group size .493

3014 FPS
2996 FPS
3013 FPS

56.5 grains with Fed 215 Mag: 3038 FPS avg. Group size 1.623

I called the third shot pulled and boy was I right.....

3040
3036
3038

Using the magnum primers were very interesting. If I wouldn't have gacked the third shot at 56.5, I believe I would have bested the regular 210 primer group. Also the FPS were very consistant using the mag primers.

I am going to make up some more loads at 56.5 with both primers and go back tomorrow or Friday and reverify my numbers from today are correct.

Man was it fun and to see the Old Man break 3000 FPS with 150gr pills was pretty cool. I think these new ABLR's are gonna have quite a few people dusting off the "old .270" and taking her out again.

That is very encouraging. Ive never tried that powder. My tests in my 270 win are starting with RL22 and H 4831sc. Hopefully real soon I will get them loaded and tested. Thanks for sharing!

Very nice with 7828. That is impressive. .493 wow. I,m going to load mine with IMR-4831 to start with. However your results will not be over looked in case my powder choice fails to impress me.

Yeah, I do believe that these loads may just make the ol' .270 shine! Very nice, Pat. Real potential for some serious power loads.

It looks like that 56.5 gr load is there, very nice. 3000 fps with the old 270 Win and a 150 gr nothing wrong at all with that.

Great results Pat. I just can't find anything to mess with, 2900 with a sleek 150, that's just a perfect set up right there. Seems like you'll have a quick work up.

Hey prehornet....

Can I ask what brand of brass you used and if you had tried that load with other 150's what the results were??

"56.5 grains with Fed 210: 3007 FPS avg. Group size .493"

So you've got a sleek, long range hunting bullet moving at 3,000 fps mv and producing 1/2 MOA groups. OUTSTANDING!

Be happy, load up a bunch of 'em and go hunt.

That's what I was screaming. Verify that load and commence to killing.

Kraky,

I only use Remington Brass. Not really sure why except that is what I have used over the years. They were all fired before and I bumped the shoulder back .002.

I went out today with 18 loaded. 9 with 56.5gr of 7828ssc and Fed 210 primers and 9 others with the identical charge with Fed 215 magnum charges.

The 9 shot strings for Fed210's avg 3018fps. The 9 shot string for the Fed215's avg 3030fps.

The 215's seem to give more consistent speed without the wide ranges as the 210's.

Any way accuracy was right at 3/4 MOA with the 210's being slightly larger than the 215's.

I did have an absolute freak of a group and I still don't believe it. I fired number 14, 15, 16 shots with the 215's and I only saw one hole. I knew my shots were good as I really bared down and made sure to follow through but I didn't get too excited as I was shooting at a black bull and it is hard to see them in there at 100. Well I walked down and about had a heart attack.

I basically put three rounds into the same hole. I will let the pictures tell the story. Is it repeatable....probably not. I just happened to squeeze the trigger 3 perfect times in a row. Even a blind squirrel gets lucky every now and then.

Wow...they look awesome. Was that 100 or 200?
Re the 215 primers I found they also worked just a tad more consistant in my 270 w/mag powders like 7828.

.071 is unreal. Congrats on the one holer. I,ve shot some great groups with the .270 over the years. Never shot three that close. Yikes, what a load.

Pat, I have always had better groups and muzzle velocities from 215 MM Fed primers. That is one impressive group, blind squirrel or not. Don't be humble, grab fame while you can!

Those are impressive velocities with 150 grain .277 bullets!!! My .270 Model 70 shoots about 3060 with 100 grain Partitions! What was your COAL for the 150 LRAB's?

It doesn't seem like that rifle is performing up to your expectations, good SIr. I suppose I could take it off your hands  Excellent shooting! You planning on stretching the legs on your .270 and see how it performs at distance?

Congratulations on a fine group, Pat. Charlie is correct in advising you to seize the moment and enjoy. It happens.

Outstanding! What an incredible group! Did you stick with the 3.375 or basically 0.005 short of max mag length?

Should I consider trying Fed mag primers in my .270 Win? Do they work well with RL 22 or H4831sc or is it only in powder like the 7828ssc that it shows potential? I typically load Win large rifle primers. I have also used CCI but am open to suggestions as I prepare to load these LR's.
