My .280 shoots a 140 AB about as good as it gets right now. Had no problems with deer or antelope last fall and also took a nice big cow elk with a .270 pushing a 150 gr. AB so THAT is what is prompting me to up the bullet size. (One can never be complacent). (NOTE: Original post was incorrect. Should read 150 gr. PT, NOT AB)

Thinking about "uping" to a 150 gr. PT for just a bit more "umph" out at 250-300 yards.

Anyone have a good "formula" to start a new load?

Dave

Are you referring to the new 150 gr AB LR?
Should be available in May.

I would look at RL 19, RL 22 and IMR 4350. These powders should get you above 2900 fps.

I am with Jim, RL19, 22, and IMR7828 would be top of the heap if I were starting load work with the new 150's.

I'd be looking at H4831SC, myself. A couple of years mucking around with other powders just didn't pan out, so I came back home to H4831 and haven't looked back.

Glad you mentioned H4831.
Another great powder for the 280 Rem.

I didn't think that there was a 270 cal 150 AB available yet? The original post is a little confusing so I apologise if I have misinterpreted it.

In any case the 280 has plenty of boiler room to get 150 grainers out there at good speed so I say go for it.

H4831 would be my first port of call but H4350 might be a go-to as well. Maybe R17 if that's all you can get. We are experiencing some powder shortages over here too so it pays to have a plan B. R19 or 22 would be ok too. Don't forget the WWpowders too, 760 or 780.

My 140 Sierra Game Kings grouped .66" @ 100yds with 55gn H-4350, chrony avg 2960fps. I have no reason to think the ABs would not be as good.

The 150gn Game Kings had between 2972 and 3008fps on the chrony with 57gn of Superformance, grouped .70" @ 100yds.

Now that the subject of component scarcity has been mentioned, I wouldn't hesitate to use something as quick-burning as H4895 if that's what I had to do. We may now be living in the age of "improvise, adapt, and overcome!"

Nothing in a 150 but I do shoot the 160 AB over 7828 shoots flat and shoots through big deer and black bears superb bullet in the 280.

...

Sorry that I made a mistatement. I meant the 150 Partition. My bad.

I have 4831, 4350 and RL-22 on hand so guess there is plenty of powder selection opportunities, I just need to find which one works the best.

I've had great luck with both the AB and the PT over the years and find no fault with either. I DO however like the controlled expansion of the AB over the fragmenting of the PT but BOTH types get the job done.

If the new 150 AccuBond LR were available, I would definitely consider that projectile as well.

Your powder selection is right in the zone. A 150 grain PT will work very well. I shoot it in my newest 280 with good results. I'm on the road, so I don't have my data available, but IMR4831 and RL19 each have worked well for me. I also use a fair amount of VN165 with that case and bullet weight.

Thanks for the help everyone, nowit's "bench time" to get the loads prepared and then some range time to follow.

Hope the load development works out as I already have my Wyoming elk tag and await a mule deer tag in the upcoming draw.
