Hi,

It’s quite obvious that this sight benefits from a large number of very knowledgeable reloaders. I have a great appreciation for all the information shared.

Could someone with Quickload please run the following:

280 Rem
150 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip
& 150 Nosler Partition

22” barrel
Max pressure 63,000 psi
 
Welcome here to the site. Lots of great folks. Unfortunately I "do not" have quickload so I cannot help on that, but I can tell you I love the .280 Remington and both the 150 gr. Partition and the Ballistic Tip will great bullets in it. I lean towards the Partition out of those two, but they both are great.

My 280 loved the 140 gr. Partition and IMR4350 powder. It was a Remington MTN rifle with the 22" barrel. With my load I got 2940 fps and nice 3/4" groups at 100 yards. It took a lot of game for me. Someone will come along shortly and help you more with your 150's, but IMR4350 would be a good powder to try. We all have our favorites, but that powder for me at least really worked well. Some of the newer powders might get you a little more speed.

My load for that is 55.5 gr of IMR-4350 .75 MOA with the 150 PT. It is a hot load so take your time and work up to it.

Anybody shot the 150 gr. E-tips? Picked up a box from SPS.

Loaded 10 tonight with imr 4831. Two lots of 5 rounds of varying length. Will shoot Tuesday.

With their 150 grain bullets, Nosler lists IMR4350 as the most accurate powder. The maximum charge in their data is 51.5 grains and the starting charge is 47.5 grains. They use a Federal 210 primer to ignite the load.
 
Thanks to everyone for the load information so far. I will certainly take it all into consideration.

I've had a bunch of factory ammo that I've been using in the 280 since it was purchased. Quite a few years ago, I found a gun shop that had Federal Premium 150 Nosler Partition's on clearance for about $15/box and I bought every box he had. Well those are about gone now and I have a bunch of once fired brass to load, all from the same lot.

I also have a 280 Ackley Improved and have found that it didn't shoot its best until pushed hard. Its got a long throat and likes a 160 gr Nosler AccuBond with 61.5 grains of RL-22. Loads a lower charge weights performed OK around 1 inch, but the 61.5 load will print less than a half inch quite regularly.

I like the 160 grain bullets in the 280 AI, but think the 150's are well suited for the std 280 Rem.

I don't know if the 280 has similar traits but I know most manuals top out at 58,000 PSI because that was the old standard set years ago. I've read a lot about how well the 280 performs when loaded to the same pressures as 270 and 30-06, thus the reason I asked for Quickload at 63,000. My intent was to start at standard book loads and work up once I know where the upper limit is.

Nosler #5 has a number of good loads to start with although they were fired from a 26 inch test barrel I can do the math and reduce the velocity by 80-100 fps to show where my 22 inch barrel should perform. I've studied quite a few of the Quickload printouts provided on the site and find them to be very helpful in selecting the right powder and finding loads to work up to. I used one of the QL printouts to comeup with a really accurate load for my 300 WSM. Someday I'll have to break down and purchase the program for my self.

I think I'll start with 4350 / 4831 and perhaps RL-19.

I've been loading .280 for two decades, and was always frustrated by available loading data because I knew that there was no reason in the world the cartridge can't be loaded to the same pressures as the .270 Winchester. A disclaimer is appropriate here, I think: even if 63000 PSI data was published for the .280, I still would not regard the data a reliable upper limit---I don't believe such a thing exists for any cartridge. As handloaders, we are really all alone, on our own, and responsible for our own safety.

When my dad taught me how to ride a bike, he took the training wheels off and told me he would hold the bike up so I wouldn't fall. The first time I looked back he was there. The second time I looked back, he wasn't, but I did not fall. Published loading data is a lot like the the dad you think is keeping the bike from falling over.

Anyway, it one day dawned on me that since the 7mm bullet is only .007" larger than than the .277" bullet I should be able to use .270 Winchester data as my reference for loading .280 Remington. A 7mm bullet will offer less resistance to chamber pressure and acceleration than a .277" bullet of the same weight, all else being equal, because of the 7mm's slightly lower sectional density. So, I have no reservations consulting the .270 Winchester loading tables when I'm thinking about loading up some .280 Remington. A word of caution, though: I would never even think of using this concept for two different cartridges that have significantly differing bullet diameters. The .25-06 and .30-06, as an example, are different enough that entirely different burn rates are optimal for each and you'll get into all kinds of differences that render this concept unusable for the pair. Another example where the concept might be perfectly useable would be .35 Whelen and the .35 Whelen necked up to .366 inch---if anyone would ever do such a thing (anyone ever heard of a .36 Whelen??).
 
This is what I get for a 280 loaded to 63000PSI.. Seems pretty good actually. Never seems like a 280 is a bad choice, that is for certain..

My fastest and most accurate load with my Browning A-Bolt, .280 Rem was: 58.0 gr of IMR 7328 SSC, CCI 250 Mag Match primer, W-W cases and the 160 Nosler AccuBond bullet. This combination in my 22 inch barrelled Browning yielded 3010 fps and 3/4 MOA groups or better.

That is a screamer of a load Charlie. That makes the 280 into a real beast for sure. I wouldn't feel too bad with that load in elk country..

At first glance, I'm a little surprized that the slower powders would do so well in the 22 inch barrel. I was first thinking of 4350 or 4831 but it appears that RL-22 and IMR 7828 have a bit of an edge although they would be compressed loads. I may have to study the printout along with Nosler #5 and choose a starting load to work with. I see the top loads approach 3000 fps. I'd be real pleased if I can find an accurate load around 2900-2925.

We have a heat wave at the moment so I'll hold off on any actual range time until the temps drop a little, or get out early in the AM when its a bit cooler.

I'll be sure to post some targets when they are available.

The .280 case shoulder is .06 longer than the .30-06 case. The 58 grain load is not a compressed load with that bullet in that case. Slower powders are not affected very much by any barrel 22 inches or longer, as shown by the velocities that I got from the 22 inch barrel and the 160 AccuBond. Plus, my rifle showed no pressure signs with this load.
