trying to help my bro in law work up a load for his Abolt with 160 gr abonds

it has a 22" barrel and all we have for powder is h4350 he tried 3 charges 47gr 48gr and 49gr

he told me that all 3 loads gave him basically the same size group with a different point of impact. the groups are about 3" @ 100yds

Should we chalk it up to the rifle not liking this bullet? Do we get another powder and keep burning it? Open to suggestions. I have these powders he could try a little of I am just going to list them I know some probably wont be compatible

I may be able to get some more what do you suggest

He has shot different loads of factory out of it and the best it has shot is with remington 140 gr corelocts. But other 140s did not produce as good of results.

Gimme some ideas

I've had two 280s, and neither liked 160 grain bullets. I could get 160s to shoot, but not as accurately as other bullets. Generally, both rifles liked 150 grain bullets better and loved 139/140 grain bullets. My current rifle (Winchester Model 70 Featherweight) shoots Hornady 139 SP, Nosler 140 PT, Nosler 140 AB and CT 140 BST to ~1/2 inch and to the same point of impact. It shoots Nosler 150 BTs to approximately an inch. I did not use H4350 with the 150 BT, but rather IMR4350. In a 22 inch barrel, a load of 52.5 grains, R 9 1/2 primers and 150 grain BT yielded 1 inch groups and a velocity of ~2700 fps. Both rifles had 1:10 twists.

I would not give up until you give IMR431 and IMR7828 a try. My A-Bolt was shooting decent with 4350, R-22 and H4831sc. IMR4831 was a whole different situation. Everything from 120NBT's to 175 Hornady's shot acceptable groups with IMR4831. IMR7828 was just a bit better with bullets heavier than 150 grains. Even so, you just might find out that that barrel does not like 160 grain AccuBonds.

I would also try H4831 and don't forget to try RL-22.
My Rem 700 in 280 and my NCR 280ai both prefer H4831 and RL-22 for the heavier bullets. If you drop down to a 140 you will want to try RL-19.
My rifles also shoot the Hornady 154gr interbond very well with RL-22.

My Ruger 77 22" in .280 loved the 160AB with H4831sc, Nosler brass and CCI primers. Sorry can not remember the whole load off the top of my head. Will have to wait until I get home.

I'm getting decent results in my M-77 Mk II, with 52 gr of RL-19 with the 160 AB, Federal brass and primer.

I had a STW that wouldn't shot the AB's at all, great with Ballistic Tips. Must've been the jacket was harder or something.

I haven't tried AccuBond with my 280 yet, let alone any bullet heavier than 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip. I have good result though with a very stout load of IMR 4831 that exceeds published load data listed on any manual. With carefull handloading, the 280 will outperformed the 270 and the 30-06 easily.

My M700 Classic 280 Remington shot the 160 gr PT right at .400" with 54.0 grs of IMR 4831, R-P case and Federal GM210M primer. This is a MAX load so start low and work up.
