Hello,

Anyone have a recipe for this combination?

I cannot find a 140 grain BT load with Reloader 17 that I have in stock.

Thanks...

Not the BT, but I did with a 140 AB and worked up to 56.0 grain where I got flattened primers and no other signs of pressure. At 55.5 grain it was running 2960 with a 22" barrel. Accuracy was around 1.25". I'm sure there was an accurate load to be found, but I never really went much further because Superformance beat it in speed and accuracy, as did RL-26.

Well Thanks,

That is a start for sure. I was thinking of trying 54.0 grains...split from a Speer 130 and 145.

Since you have a lot of it, I'd certainly give it a try. I think you'll find admirable results, but nothing "magical" that RL-19 or 4831 doesn't do a smidge better. But you should find success with it.

What are your goals?

My experience with R17 has been this...
A true gift from the powder gods in the shorter but fatter cases like the WSM's.
It can make those chubby guys surpass their older Magnum counterpart and run right with Roy Weatherby’s fav's .

Thst said in taller, thinner cases like a 270/280 .....R17 did not bring out the best. Matter of fact it was nothing to write home about in velocity and accuracy.
Sticking with just Alliant R16,R19 worked better for me in those two platforms . [270/280)

Hello,

Reloader 17 sings in my 284 Win for sure. I just want to lad abox or so for my son and that is why I have Reloader in stock.
Thanks...

I've had excellent results with RL17 in my 280 with lighter bullets. With 140g BT I started at 52g and went up to 55g, there I had slight ext. mark, I backed off to 53.5g were I had a 3/4" group, average velocity of just over 3000 fps and a sd of 10. Model 70 clone with 24" barrel.

My go to load with this rifle is 150g AB over RL26, bug hole groups, average velocity just under 3000 fps and sd of 8.

If you start around 51g or 52g and watch for pressure you should be able to get up to 54g or 55g. Good luck and be safe.

I checked in five different load manuals and the only one that even mentioned RL17 was the Speer. IIRC, 53.5 gr. max for their 145 gr. bullet. I wonder why literally every manual ignores RL17? Back when WMR was available only Nosler and Hornady even mentioned it in anything and not much of that. WMR had problems as it worked great in some cartridges but was erratic as hell in others. Didn't work at all in the 30-06 and worked like a champ in the .270 Win., .280 Rem. and .300 Win. Mag. for me. Go figure. Sorry. I couldn't find anything using RL17.

Alliant themselves have 15 bullets listed in their 280 data and a total of 26 recipes for them.

R17 is only listed 3 times from the mothership themselves. 🤷‍♂️

If one gets it to work well that's good.
I didn't have great success...or better put...i had greater success with other powders in the 280 and truth be told the old traditional longer thinner cases not the best for me.

Shorter fatter cases works like a dream.

Hopefully it works well for you.

Good luck

RL17 works in about everything I tried it in. Even went so far and tried it in 204 Ruger and 223 Rem.

The only cartridge I've use RL17 in has been the 7x57 Mauser. Not one loading manual has shown data for the cartridge. I've used it slghtly with 140 gr. bullets a with fair results. It's a dream deal with the 150 gr. Nosler Partition with 2880 FPS and groups under .75" with some smaller that .50" What's not to like brass life is good. I've run it in a Winchester m70 Featherweight and a Ruger #1a with the better groups coming from the M70 The Ruger runs closer to 1.0 to 1.25" for the most part.
I've been doing so work using the 150 gr. AccuBond Long Range zas I think that just might be the perfect bullet for the cartridge. So far it hasn't worked worth spit in the M70 or #1. My custom Mauser needs to have the receiver replaced I'm thinking but the load wasn't any better in that rifle. I've got to get out and take it to my gunsmith to see what needs to be done. Action is one by FN and was originally chambered to the .270 Win. The problem had shown up when the rifle was a .270 and I stuck the gun in the closet and forgot about it way back around 1973/4. Not remembering the problem I had my gunsmith build the rifle which today is nothing more than a pretty wall hanger.
