30-06 AI

Old #7,

If the 'smith who did the work, did it correctly, their should be .004" crush fit........that's the beauty of the AI. That's why I'm taking it with me to Alaska this Sept for Grizzly......if the airlines loose my ammo, I'd still be able to buy standard 30-06 ammo and have my rifle up and running once I make sure it's sighted in. On that note, how they loose my ammo, which will be "in" the rifle case, will be of a great surprise to me.

Gssp,
I see what your saying.
I can chamber standard rounds in my AI.
My rifle was chambered to the standard '06 round. When my smith reamed out the chamber he had to ream up to that 2.109 point (or where ever my top of shoulder dimention was) to produce the correct shoulder angle.
At that point a standard '06 round will chamber easily. If he cuts the rear of the chamber down to the 2.069 dimention then I would definetly have more that a crush fit due to the .04 difference between the listed dimentions.

I guess what I am trying to say is, why is the AI shoulder @ 2.069 and the standard @ 2.109.
I would think that the AI should have the same top of shoulder dimention as the standard round. :?:

Here is a cut away of my fire formed brass.
I was just curious what it looked like so I cut it with my dremel tool.
I didn't find any evidence of stretching in the web.
The brass is R-P once fired then reloaded and fired in the AI

Ackley's book tells why.

I am a very happy camper today.
I went to the range today and shot my '06 AI.
I finally shot a three round group with all three touching

Here is the rifle.
Rem 700 limited aniversary edition reamed to 30-06 AI.

The load was RP brass, Fed 210, 64.5 grs of H4831sc, 165gr Nosler BT, col 3.425. It averaged 3002fps. I didn't have any pressure signs but I think I will keep this one.
