I have a friend who is hoping to be drawn for a Maine moose hunt this year. His weapon of choice is a 30-06. I asked him what bullet he thought he would use on this hunt and after thinking for a moment, he said that at this point he had no idea. Off the top of my head, I recommended a 180 grain Partition.
What are your opinions on this. Granted he probably won't be making a long range shot, so a heavier bullet is not out of the question, but I have never hunted or even visited Maine.
Thanks,
JDMAG

For Moose, load your 30-06 with a 180 gr or 200 gr AB or PT.
I think I would go with a 200 gr PT and never look back.

I think in the o6 the 180 nosler Partition is dead on. A friend of mine recently missed a little on a running five point bull elk. His 180 nosler Partition broke both back hips which did indead knock that bull down. He walked up on the elk and finished him off at point blank. This story convinces me the Partition will work on big bones. He said the range was approx. 150 yards. His load was one of my handloads clocking just under 2800 FPS. You can push 200 grain nosler partitions out at 2600 pretty easily with several different powders. I would not hesitate to use either one on moose. I personally perfer 180,s in the 30:06 and 200 grainers in the 300 mag. Here whats funny. My dad gum 06 shoots the 200 grainers real tight at 100 yards. I get about 1 inch groups with 180,s . Oh well,I still perfer the 180,s for the 06 even though the 200,s shoot better groups in my own gun. Thats whats fun about reloading. It gives you the opportunity to make more choices. 180,s 200,s . I don,t know. your call

As usual JD is dead on! A 180 or 200 PT or AB would be deadly.

I asked a moose about this and he said you guys are all wrong. He would suggest you go with soft air pellets.

My old man has taken two BC Moose with his 30/06 BAR w/ Federal Premium 180 Nosler Partitions. They have worked excellent in both cases. One shot kill in each case with excellent penetration and killing power. Scotty

Can't argue with that huh?

There aren't many animals on this continent that can't be taken cleanly with a 30-06 and 180 gr. Partitions. At least in the last 60 million years.

Now just how many wooly mammoths and T-rexes have you killed lately? and where?

Just to be different I was going to say 200 or 220 Partition, but realistically, an '06 with a 180 Partition is a tough combo to beat. Although I might be talked into a 180 E-Tip. Or Trophy Bonded. Or Swift A-Frame. Or Barnes TSX / TTSX / MRX. Or a North Fork (now made in Philomath, OR!). Wealth of good bullets these days.

A 30-06 is really the only rifle I really lack in my collection. I have it covered in capability with my 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Mag, 270WSM, and a few others, but I want an 06, just because. I would probably load it with a traditional Nosler Partition and call it good. It would be anything rifle, for just carrying when I wanted to. I think everybody needs one. Right now, it is my 270WSM, but I think I could force the 06 to replace it. Scotty

The 30-06 is a classic for NA hunting. I agree, the 180 gr PT will cover anything in NA.

I routinely took Canada moose with a 7mm Remington Magnum and either 175 grain Fail Safe bullets or 175 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws. All were one shot kills. I can't believe that a 30-06 with 180 grain bullets would be any less effective.

My uncle uses an old Rem pump 30-06 and 165gn bullets for all his big game hunting. This includes his bull moose taken a few years ago. He took a cow elk at 400yds last fall using the same rifle/bullet set up.

It would be pretty hard to top the 30-06 with the Nosler Partition. I would think for worldwide service, it would get the job done. Scotty
