30-06 best loads 180 gr Nosler Part or AB

I am loading for a buddies 1980s era rem 700 in 30-06. Loading for an elk hunt and wanting
to use 180 gr bullets in partitions or Accu-bonds. Does anyone have a sure-fire powder bullet recipe?

I load 55.3 grains of power pro 4000mr with the nosler 180grn partitions. Ymmv.

My 30-06 is relic, hand me down from father in laws grandfather. Shoots good. Loves the partitions and 220grn interlock RN

There’s no such thing as sure fire anything when loading. Lol

56 to 57.5 grains of IMR4831 is very accurate with 180’s in my 06’s and tops out at about 2800 in velocity. Work up from 55 and I’ll bet your rifles max will be most accurate, and will do a fine job with AB’s or PT’s. I’m partial to Partitions over Accubonds.

Got to agree on everything with one tiny change - I like an H instead of IMR.

My go to for my fathers 30-06 is 60 grains of H4831sc with the 180 grain partitions.

Maybe not sure fire, but as close as I've seen. Between 56-56.5 of IMR 4350 loaded with 180 gr bullet .040-.060 off the lands. Anymore I just load at 56.2 and be done with it. I use Remington cases, so others might need a tad higher charge.

Worked in every 06 I've run it through and I've got several, and have loaded for a few others. That was Hornady's, both spire point and RN, Speer HC's, Sierra PH's, and Remington CL. Well run 2700 plus in a 22" barrel.

RL22 gets the velocity you want for 180 grainers on elk. I'd focus on top velocity accompanied by acceptable accuracy. Either of the bullets are excellent choices for the job at hand.

As Shadetree said, 56-56.5 grs of 4350 …. If the gun won’t shoot that you ve got problems. It s been known as a load that is accurate in any 30-06 that’s a capable gun accuracy wise. Try a couple difference 180 s with that charge weight and let the rifle tell you what it likes!

I see everyone is calling for 4350 in the 30-06. Believe it or not, in all the years I’ve loaded I’ve never used 4350’s in anything. The first loads for a 270 win and ‘06 were using IMR 4831 some 30+ years ago. It’s worked great in everything it’s suitable for since. I’ve just never had a need to try any of the 4350’s, IMR 4831 has remained the same no matter what. Who knows maybe I’ll have to see what all the fuss is about. And please don’t think I’m downing any of the 4350’s, simply haven’t used it. I kinda feel like I’ve been under a rock for all these years for not trying it. Lol

Nope you're not living under a rock, you use 4831 for the same reason I use 4350. It has worked for you and continues to, so makes it hard to mess with success.

Truth is the 06 isn't very fussy, so there is that going for it with different powders.

57 gr's of IMR 4350 with 165 gr bullets has produced very good accuracy for me with numerous 06's in Remington cases. As has 56.2 with 180 grain bullets. If a gun is capable of shooting, those 2 loads have proven to me they will work.

180AB
Nosler brass trimmed to 2.48"
55.5gn of H414
Fed GM210M primer
COL: 3.390"
Muzzle velocity is around 2823 FPS

I have two Remington M700s, an early 80's BDL and a Classic but not sure of the year. Whoever stamped the marks denoting year of manufacture botched the job so they're unreadable Anyway, while experiments with the 180 gr. Hornady Spire points I worked up to 58.0 gr. H4350. Both rifles shot in the low 2800s and accuracy was MOA or slightly less. Pressures appeared to be normal. This was during early summer with temps in the 99 to 105 degree range. I would have no qualms using that load on an elk hunt.
I have used the 165 gr. AccuBond from my 06 on an elk hunt. Killed a fat juicy cow elk at just a bit over 100 Yards. That's another one I would have no problem using on elk.

Paul, I'm a IMR 4350 guy simply because it's what I've always had on hand so I already got a lot of good loads with it in a fair number of different cartridges from 250 Savage up to 348 Winchester and several in between. 4350 is a very versatile powder.

I've always suspected H4350 would be just as versatile, with the added benefit of temp stability if someone happens to hunt in frigid temperatures. Can't hardly go wrong with either.
