When I was a teen, a fellow in our hunting club had a Mod 742 Carbine in 30-06. None of us used scopes back then because "everyone knows you can use a scope in the woods" ( pfft!)
I tried to help him zero it one day, and he hit the "edge" of a paper plate at 50yds. He said "that's good enough" and later that day shot a deer right underneath his tree stand, ha. He was convinced from then. I remember it was "LOUD" especially since none of us used hearing protection back then!
