Well I finally got some time, now that elk season is over, to try a different powder in my Tikka t3. I was having problems with RL 22 and 165 grain accubonds, only could get mid 2700 fps. I found some H4350 to try and using that and the same Federal GM215M primers I was able to get 2888 on average with this load, this is 59 grains of H4350. I'm a happy man again.

Now I just need to find what OAL is likes the best. I also tried 63.5 and 64.0 grains of RL 22 (I had to use a two foot drop tube to get it all in there, but still had room). I got the 165 just over 2800 fps. My buddy that was shooting with me said it was noticable louder than everything else I had been shooting, so I'm thinking most of that extra powder was burning out of the end of the barrel.

Most of the powder is consumed in the first few inches of barrel, Pop could run the figures through Quick Load and tell you the number.
My standard 30/06 load is 58.5-58.8grs IMR-4350, 165gr bullet seated 10-20 off the lands, Fed 210M or WLR and have used various brands of brass. Depending on barrel length, usually 22" for mine, 2830-2850FPS.Rick.

There is nothing wrong with using the 215M in that load, but you can get by very nicely with a large rifle primer if you wanted to save your magnum primers for a load that needs them. You may want to back off and work up your load to ensure you are getting the best accuracy possible. The Tikka magazine will likely be your limiting factor in OAL, but in general, 10 to 20 off the lands will yield good accuracy. If magazine depth limits your OAL, play with charge variations to accomplish the accuracy you want.

I have room to tcuch the lands if I wanted to and still fit in the magazine. Right now I'm approximately .20 off of them. I did work up the load starting at 54.0 grains and went up to 59.

59.0 grains was not too bad in the accuracy department but nothing to brag about either. As for primers, I only load for the 30-06 right now. I have the GM215M, standard 215s and some CCI bench rest as well as standard and maganum CCI primers.

I figured the best would be the Federal match grade ones. I might play with the other ones. I also want to make sure that the load will fire even on the coldest of hunts.

I did better over my chrono using IMR4064 powder and I always use mag primers in my hunting loads as you never know what the weather will be etc. Accuracy was excellent also.

H4350 is hard to beat and some now say RL-17. When I get my new stock on my 06 sometime next spring or summer I will give RL-17 a try. I think it is the only powder for a 06 that I have not tested.

I've always used 54 grains of Winchester 760 powder under a Nosler 150 GR BT and a CCI Large Rifle Primer. I've never had the need to chrono any of them but they will shoot a MOA with no problem and I've killed many deer in the 250 yard range and a couple beyond 300 yards. Incidently, that powder load is equivilant to a Winchester factory load on 150 grain Silvertips. I got that load info from an Olin employee. My reason for choosing this load was that it matched the factory load and I can interchange a box of Silvertips for one of my loads and still be within an inch of my grouping.

Win 760 was the other powder I have used for many years. I have used it with 130gr Speer HP which work very well on our small Ca blacktail deer and 150gr Nosler PAR or BT bullets . My load was 150 gr bullet and 62gr of win760 with a mag primer. Very accurate in many different rifles.
I did not mention it as I find few people who have or use it. It does meter very-very well also.

Groups are 5/8 to 7/8", my best group is 3/8" it was very calm and that day I was 5/8" or less with 4 of 5 groups. I am not the best shot either. I have neck sized 7 times before needing to FL size the brass. I have not had sticky bolt lift except after 6 - 7 reloads that were only neck sized with a lee collet die. The primer pockets are still like new after 9 firings so I am certain it is safe and probably 65kpsi or less as quickload predicts. I dont limit my 06 loads to 59,800 like most manuals because the 270 win Sammi limit is 65K and it is also obviously safe to 65K in an 06 chamber Savage 116.

I've been shooting H4350, started at 56 - 57 grains. 30-06 Douglas barrel
1903 action, B& C stock. COAL with Hornady 165 or 150 grain BTSP
bullets is 3.300 ...thats seated against the lands.
should I start .025 off the lands?
