30-06 Ruger M77 Hawkeye In My Future

I was told that the Ruger will come from the distributor in 10 days then it will be shipped to the dealer and that means about three weeks. Here is what I will be getting.

....................As you know, the Ruger built-in integral mounts and the scope rings are about as tough and about the best bomb proof scope mount system as you can get on a rifle. I`ve never had any problems with either of mine.

Yes, if I had to pick one thing on a Ruger Bolt rifle it would be their mounting system for their rings. Never a windage problem or elevation problem with adjustments on your scope because it is perfectly in line with the bore and with the recoil lugs slots also built into the receiver I don't think there is a better system.

The Ruger M77 Hawkeye is a real step up for Ruger and a honest attempt to make a better quality product at a competitive price than the Mark II.

1. They now cold hammer forge their own barrels.

2. They put a new trigger on the M77 and it is great.

3. They improved their process of matt-finish on blued and stainless.

4. They change the ergonomics of the stock and it is a dream to handle with great balance.

5. Not to mention their already true control feed.

6. Not to mention their already great three position safety.

7. Not to mention their system for mounting the scope.

8. On top of all of this their wood and it's finish is better looking.

9. On top of all of this their over all fit and finish as well as looks is much better.

10. They are consistently more accurate on average than in the past.

They are much more interested in the complete rifle and what the customer wants today than Ruger has ever been and they have done a great job. Very good and versatile hunting rifle that has been well thought out.

.....................No doubt over the last more recent years, Ruger has done quite a bit to improve their rifles. Not only that, but in fact, no other rifle maker in recent years or in the distant past has done as much with new rifle product innovating as Ruger. Namely the 375 Ruger, the 416 Ruger, the RCMs and all of the rifles chambered for them. The viability, value, or long term staying power in the future popularity of any combined Hornady/Ruger project can never be under-estimated.

But there are still those today who will never own a Ruger rifle because of past issues with accuracy in the older Rugers, of which there were some. These are hunting rifles, not match target rifles that consistently shoot 1/2" or less groups.

Kinda reminds me of the many who still associate the Elite 4200 scopes of today with the cheapie lower quality Bushnells of the past. The 4200 in a few circles, is still guilty based on past association. There are still a few close minded diehards, who will never buy any Bushnell under any circumstances, no matter how good they get.

Bullet,

Are you on the Ruger payroll? Sounds like a good sales job.

The Hawkeye is a good rifle, however. I have two of them and the are a joy to shoot, to be certain. I wouldn't be distressed to own a Hawkeye in 30-06, but I have a Model 70 Featherweight, instead.

Who knows, somebody from Ruger might read my sales pitch and hire me.

You know I have owned them off and on for years since 1978 before they started making their own barrels and never had one that could not shoot. Today, you will not run into that problem that came up from time to time and a lot of the past was the ones doing the shooting. Case in point, Tom a member of a lease I belonged to, was trying to sight in his 270 in a Ruger Mk II and was shooting 6-9 inch groups with Federal Premium ammo. He said it must be the scope or rifle. I watch him shoot 5 groups and the smallest was 6". So I ask him if I could. I shot a 3/4" group the first group and a 5/8" the second group. It was not the scope or rifle. I believe a lot of the past has to do with shooters or I sure was lucky in the seven Ruger bolt actions I have owned through the years including my new 358Win M77.

I have always liked the controlled round feed of a Ruger. It's nice and smooth. Ruger knows how to blue a rifle also.
I did find that my rifle had a very short throat. Loading rounds to fit in the mag box and close to the lands was never a problem.
The first thing I would do to that new rifle is bed it. I had a MKII in 7mm mag (my son has it now) that wouldn't shoot at all when I got it. I bedded it, smoothed, shortened and lightened the trigger pull, removed the pressure point and ended up bedding a pressure point back in before I was happy with it.
I have to tell you the truth.... It takes ALOT to make me happy.
All of the work resulted in going from 3" groups down to .75" all the time.
Ruger makes a great gun right here at home. They have also fought very well against the anti gun crowd.
Congrats on your new rifle.

Thanks Old#7, I do my home work before I buy something and also rely on my past experiences which many times were trial and error due to luck or just plain ignorance but I ended up most of the time being lucky. There was really no one around to give you a lot of info, you had to find things out for yourself but that is good also. I chose the Ruger Hawkeye M77 because it is a refinement of years of trial and error by Ruger and hunters. Sometimes we come full circle and it is kind of strange how I have done so. I started with Rugers and now after all these years I am back to using Rugers. I have always owned one or two while owning Remington, Weatherby, Savage, Marlin, Browning and others. But have decided to use them now as my main battery of rifles.

Here is a picture of my new 30-06 Hawkeye. He left the bolt out because this is a new in the box rifle and he would not take the bolt out of it's packaging. It is being shipped today might get it Friday but more than likely by Monday.

I started working with my Hawkeye chambered in 35 Whelen today. The initial work isn't as precise as the 358, but some of the initial loads showed promise. Consequently, Bullet, the 2495 with 225 Nosler Partition mirrored your results. This certainly has potential.

Nope Greg, it sure isn't at all. It will be here maybe Saturday but more than likely Monday. My Scope gets here tomorrow or Saturday.

That stock is smokin nice. I've seen that stump before some place.

Yep, I believe you have, it is the stump that my gunsmith owns who did all the work on my Weahterby's. He will miss me soon since I will not be buying or having anymore work on Custom Weatherby's done. Might every once in a while pick up my 300Wby Custom and shoot it but my hunting will be done with my Rugers and my Leupolds. Guess I am back where I began in my hunting life with Rugers and Leupolds with Ruger SBH as my back up. And to tell you the truth of the matter I am very happy. Can't wait to use my 358Win Hawkeye.
