I purchased a Browning 1895 in 30-06 in excellent condition. Are there any concerns with loading for this rifle? Anyone currently loading for one?

Congratulations on the new rifle.
My only caution would be to carefully work up to upper level loads. The lever action is a good action but not as strong as a bolt therefore you may have to max out below published max loads.

What bullet(s) are you thinking of loading for your 1895?

Congrats. Beautiful rifle. You can use any factory round out there so loads at comparable pressures are ok. Like JD asked what bullets?

My dad has one. Great gun.
We've had good luck with 61 gr imr4350, and 150gr nosler SB, army brass, and CCI 250 primers. velocity was just a touch under 3000.
59 grains also worked well with the 165's. Velocity was 2812, and the sd was 8 8)

These are not starting loads. Work up carefully.

61grs of IMR4350 is one hot round and is close to max for the cartridge especially using CCI 250 primers. Very interesting that it has not caused a problem in that type of rifle. That is one cool looking rifle for sure.

On the issue of bullets I'm still open, but plan to try a variety of 165 and 180s (Nosler, Speer, Hornady and Sierra) and see which the rifle likes best. In the area of Wisconsin that I live in deer are normally taken at less than 200 yards.

I've seen 1895s fitted with scopes but my plan is to stick with the tang sight that was already installed when I bought the rifle.

WOW, what a classic rifle and cartridge indeed and a classic way to set it up.

Or if you are actually not going to use it past 200 yards a classic 220gr Nosler PT Semi Spitzer. That would have plently of power and the trajectory would be pretty decent for your 200 yard range with a receiver sight. Sounds like a classic rifle/cartridge combo. Plus, it would be a hammer on big deer and bear. Scotty

Or that. I was just thinking about the classic look of the big 220. Either one would probably be pretty awesome with an 1895 and receiver type sights. Scotty

Either one of those around 2450 (220) and 2550 (200) would be pretty good loads for a 30/06 out to normal hunting ranges. Those would probably shoot through an elk lengthwise. I would think a 220 or 200 NP would be excellent big bear medicine at under 200 yards. It would have excellent penetration with such high Sectional Densities and strong bullet construction. Doesn't really look marginal in any way to me. Scotty

In Germany the hunters used the Barnes 250 Original RN in the 30-06 for big boars. Devastating!

That would be a heckuva round also. That big RN Barnes O. IT would make for a pretty cool looking round also. I would like to try that 220 out of an 06 just for the old school look, and really, you aren't giving up much for shots under 250 or there abouts. Heck, you can push them to over 2700 out of a 300 Win Mag, that would make an easy 300 yard elk hammer. Scotty

250gr Barnes Original RN is devastating on any thing it hits. I sure wish I had some left.

I have a Winchester 1895 in .30-06 (Miroku) and I understand it and the Browning are both safe for modern loads. A lot of the original 1895's aren't. I can't remember why, but I think the steels used at the time weren't up to it and the bolt would "flow", increasing headspace.

I have had good results with 50gr of Varget / Nosler 150gr BT's.
