i am getting ready to load 30-30 rounds for my nephew. have 125 gr. sierras, benchmark, varget, imr 3031 for powder. does anyone have some good starting loads for this. my nephew was in a terrible car accident in july. he since has made a great recovery although not complete. just trying to get him ready if he draws a spring bear tag.

Sierra list with the 125 grain HP/FN maximum charges of 34.0 grains of Benchmark, 37.0 grains of Varget and 29.3 grains of IMR3031. Drop back ten percent for starting charges and you'll be in the right spot. I certainly pray your nephew recovers fully.

the coal will be shorter than the specs. with the bullet seated to the cannelure. does this need to happen? do i need to crimp ? its in a lever action rifle. just wondering thanks

On lever guns, it is generally a good idea to load to the cannelure and crimp. It is when the OAL is longer than standard that you get into trouble as the cartridge can't pass the loading gate.

There's no time like the present to plan ahead for the future. When your nephew is back to 100%, be ready with a pound of Leverevolution and a box 160gr FTXs. Start at 32 and go on up to 35.5. My son used grandpa's ol 336 in 2011. Didn't get to tag anything, but range results were pretty good just shy of 35. In the meantime, wish him luck on that spring tag!

33.5g of this powder and the 160g FTX works great in my 336. I kept the COAL at the SAMI max.

Varget is next to try for me.
