Hey guys. I recently aquired a vanguard deluxe in .257 weatherby mag for a great price. I'm not crazy about the .257 family but couldn't turn it down for the price. I had thought about rebarrelling in to a 300 weatherby but with the 30 nosler claiming the same ballistics with less powder and recoil I'm leaning towards it. Having never laid eyes on a 30 nosler round, will it work in the same action as a .257 weatherby? And do any of you have experience building off a vanguard action? Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys

According to Nosler, the OAL of the loaded 30 Nosler cartridge will be 3.34", making it fit in std. length receivers. I have owned three Vangard rifles. They were well made and worked fine in the .257Wby, .270wsm and .338Win Mag. Some have said that the Howa rifles are the same receiver, but I can't say.

Nosler manual #8 show vel. w/200 gr Partition around 3200 fps, making it a fine big game caliber.

All the best, Jim

I would bet the 30 Nosler and 300 Wby are just about identical in case capacity. The 300 Wby should function well from your current rifle. The 30 Nosler may or may not take some work to make it function well.

Nothing against the 30 at all though. We're I building a big 30, the Nosler is pretty good for a 3.6" length magnum. Probably a bit better than the 300 Weatherby in regards to Bullet seating.

Jim I do believe howa makes the vanguard receiver for weatherby. I think the safest route would be to rebarrel to 300 weatherby but im still leaning towards the 30 nosler. I think brass availability would be about the same unless the 30 nosler really takes off

Well now based on what I've read, the .257 and 300 weatherby are 2 different action lengths with the .257 being a standard 30-06 length. So if that's correct, the 30 nosler would be a better choice. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks guys

SAAMI Max OAL: .257Wby - 3.250" / .300Wby - 3.560" / 30-06 - 3.340" / 30N - 3.340"
Case length: .257Wby - 2.549" / .300Wby - 2.825" / 30-06 - 2.494" / 30N - 2.556"

BTW, .270Wby & 7mmWby are the same case as the .257Wby...
