I have a question for the above rifle. A guy on another forum is offering to trade the above rifle with 250 to 300 rounds down the pipe for my Tikka T3 light. Would this be worth the trade?

Some of the BDL's are 24" barrels which would not give you true 300 RUM potential. Check it out.
Not sure what your Tikka T3 is chambered for but I think you may be further ahead to keep your Tikka.

Tikka is chambered in 30-06. I decided that I want to step up to a magnum of some sort. If I get this RUM I don't plan on loading it hot, about mid level loads.

Corey

Corey,

Just make sure it has a 26" barrel.
Post some pictures when you get her home.

Corey, sell your Tikka, it is a great rifle and I bet you would get a fair price for it. Then, look at the 300WSM in a M70 of one of the makes they offer. If your not planning to load the 300RUM up to full specs, you might as well settle into a WSM or WM and enjoy cheaper cases and much less powder usage, in a smaller more portable rifle. Scotty

Yeah I thought about that too. What does it cost to ship a rifle? I am trying to sell it too, but lots of people looking but no one really talking. Has not been that long either though.

Corey

It costs about 25.00 to take your rifle to FEDEX and ship it anywhere Corey.

Try putting it up on 24h Campfire as well. They get alot of people looking as well. Scotty

Yeah I have it on there as well. Thank you.

Corey,

As Scotty mentioned, 24hour classifieds get a lot of visibility. Give it some time and you will sell your Tikka.
Good luck selling your rifle and picking up a 300 Mag.

I'm torn on this one. With the rum I'm getting dies and brass in the trade and I have rings that fit a Remington already. If I get the Winchester in 300 WSM I will have to buy rings, dies and brass. I kind like the idea of a RUM too, I only know one person in town that owns one.

Corey

I'm in the minority on this one. Get the 300RUM! You may not get full performance out of the 24" but it would be handy.

The RUM will handle the 220gr bullets more efficiently while the WSM tops out at 200gr due to its shorter neck length. If you're not planning on going heavier than 200gr the WSM is more prevalent, uses less powder and the FN M70s are very nice. Recoil from the RUM feels like the 338WM on my shoulder while the WSM is less.

Personally, if your shooting under 325 yds, I don't see the need for either. The -06 will handle anything you'll encounter in the forest.

Amen!

Also "PENDING" on how he fired those 250-300 rounds that barrel might have one foot in the grave!

How would a person know? And what causes that too rapid of fire?

Corey

Barrel abuse (knowingly or not) consists of not cleaning, firing too fast, no cooling off periods etc.
A thorough examination of the throat will provide you with the answer. Any gunsmith worth his salt with a good bore scope can in fact tell you.

BTW what caliber is the Tikka?

He tells me it wasnot abused we shall see. The Ticca is a 30-06.

What do you guys think is too many to shoot in a row in a 300 RUM? 3 max or less?

Corey

I like to give my 300RUM a minimum of two minutes between shots. It has a heavy barrel but will heat quickly and open group size if not given enough time to cool.

If it's the first shot of the day, I'll pop off the second right after it. After that, I wait 5 min between each shot for a given powder charge and 15 min going from one powder charge load to the next. I have a sporter barrel and it heats up quickly. I always tried to do my load developemnet shooting early in the AM when it's cooler to help duplicate the temps during hunting season.
